My Weekend Was Better Than Yours

I had the most fantastic weekend taking in the sites and eating lots of food.

This past weekend was amazing. I am constantly exploring the city but this weekend I took it to a new level. I spent all day Saturday and Sunday walking in circles to see some really cool things. Not only did I eat some mouth watering food, but I also spent time in some of the greenery that NYC offers. I also ended up walking close to 25 miles in just those two days combined - wowza! Check it out.

1. Jack's Wife Freda

This cafe is everything and more. My meal consisted of pooched eggs on top of salmon and potato cakes with the most delicious beet hollandaise sauce. Intern brunch for the win!

2. West Village Community Garden

Next, another intern, Katie, and myself headed over to the East Village to check out a community garden. It is run by the members of the community but has been deemed a NYC park because of the amount of traffic they get. Not a bad for a selfie. Am I right?

3. International Sushi Day

The best part about NYC is all the amazing food that surrounds you at every waking second of every day. To celebrate international sushi day (not a real holiday by any means), myself and two other interns ordered almost everything on the menu. YOLO.

4. "Les Misérables"

Theatre is my favorite pass-time in the city. I have been here almost six weeks and have seen seven shows in that time, which is not enough if you ask me. I have never seen this show professionally, let alone on Broadway. You cannot never get enough of the music from this classic tale. It is closing soon enough so do not wait "one day more!"

5. Hell's Kitchen Bars

It is crazy to think that just a few short years ago Hell's Kitchen was a dangerous place. After all, heroes like Daredevil and Jessica Jones demand the NYC sect all the time on Netflix. However, now the place has some of the best bars in town. We checked out a dance club with the most happening tunes to headed over to an Irish pub for some much needed beer and karaoke.

6. Smorgasburg

This is the outdoor food market that always has the craziest foods. From spiced mango to ramen noodle burgers (check out the above cover photo), there is something for everyone! The event is every Saturday and Sunday, with over 75 vendors selling their best creations.

7. Brooklyn Botanical Garden

Talk about the perfect way to forget about all the concrete New Yorkers are constantly on! The gorgeous 52-acre garden features plants from all over the world, including a rose garden and a Japanese garden. The perfect place to spend a sunny day, especially if you bring a blanket and want to lay out!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
