The final month of 2016 is upon us, and it seems like the year has flown by. It’s time to reflect upon our year, and for me this means it is time to reflect on all the new music I’ve been exposed to. Not all of these songs are new releases, but they are new to me. All of them have had some influence on me, and I would highly recommend checking them out. Here are my Top 10 Alternative Songs of 2016.

10. Cookie Thumper!, Die Antwoord

This rap-rave group from South Africa combines danceable rhythms, crazy-fast multilingual raps and a very unique visual style in a song that tackles a controversial topic. What more could you ask for?

9. Animal Kingdom, Beau

This song is a chill yet angst-fueled anthem about the system being taken over by evil. It’s catchy and it makes you want to run far away from society.

8. Cry Baby, Melanie Martinez

Want to cry your eyes out over emotional lyrics? Want to cry because you feel empowered about yourself? Then this is the song for you.

7. Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins), Father John Misty

This ballad is incredibly romantic, despite its push away from traditional clichés of love. Guaranteed to throw you deep into the feels.

6. F*** S*** Up, Wingnut Dishwashers Union

A classic song about loving punk rock, yourself, and living in the moment. It’ll have you throwing on your leather jacket and picking up a guitar instantly.

5. Past Lives, BORNS

From the hauntingly beautiful intro to the bouncy chorus, you can’t just not dance when you listen to this song. Go ahead. Try.

4. I Broke Up In Amarante, Los Campesinos!

This song has classic Los Campesinos! metaphors and a danceable beat. You’ll want to put this one on repeat.

3. Loudspeaker, MUNA

A song about unapologetically loving yourself, this song makes you want to scream the lyrics from a rooftop and gives you the confidence to actually do so.

2. Good Morning, Grouplove

This power-dance anthem about living in the moment is a party in your headphones.

1. Desire, Dilly Dally

A fresh take on classic grunge, this emotional song is what every punk lover needs in their life. It’s exactly what you would expect Nirvana to sound like in 2016.

I hope these songs have as much influence on you as they did on me. Happy listening!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
