The final month of 2016 is upon us, and it seems like the year has flown by. It’s time to reflect upon our year, and for me this means it is time to reflect on all the new music I’ve been exposed to. Not all of these songs are new releases, but they are new to me. All of them have had some influence on me, and I would highly recommend checking them out. Here are my Top 10 Alternative Songs of 2016.
10. Cookie Thumper!, Die Antwoord
This rap-rave group from South Africa combines danceable rhythms, crazy-fast multilingual raps and a very unique visual style in a song that tackles a controversial topic. What more could you ask for?
9. Animal Kingdom, Beau
This song is a chill yet angst-fueled anthem about the system being taken over by evil. It’s catchy and it makes you want to run far away from society.
8. Cry Baby, Melanie Martinez
Want to cry your eyes out over emotional lyrics? Want to cry because you feel empowered about yourself? Then this is the song for you.
7. Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins), Father John Misty
This ballad is incredibly romantic, despite its push away from traditional clichés of love. Guaranteed to throw you deep into the feels.
6. F*** S*** Up, Wingnut Dishwashers Union
A classic song about loving punk rock, yourself, and living in the moment. It’ll have you throwing on your leather jacket and picking up a guitar instantly.
5. Past Lives, BORNS
From the hauntingly beautiful intro to the bouncy chorus, you can’t just not dance when you listen to this song. Go ahead. Try.
4. I Broke Up In Amarante, Los Campesinos!
This song has classic Los Campesinos! metaphors and a danceable beat. You’ll want to put this one on repeat.
3. Loudspeaker, MUNA
A song about unapologetically loving yourself, this song makes you want to scream the lyrics from a rooftop and gives you the confidence to actually do so.
2. Good Morning, Grouplove
This power-dance anthem about living in the moment is a party in your headphones.
1. Desire, Dilly Dally
A fresh take on classic grunge, this emotional song is what every punk lover needs in their life. It’s exactly what you would expect Nirvana to sound like in 2016.
