To My Sister in her First Year of College,
As your high school career comes to an end soon you will be starting to get everything ready for college, registration for classes, picking out everything to make your dorm room your home away from home, and lastly getting on campus. Here are a few things I have learned in my first year that I want to share with you
First, go to bed a decent hour. You need 7-8 hours of sleep each night. It has shown that test scores have lowered when there is a lack of sleep involved. On top of getting enough sleep, you get to choose your classes, I would recommend if you can choose an earlier class then you have time in the day to study. Strive to get your homework done at a certain time, then you can watch Netflix and just relax the rest of the night.
Second thing is, do not skip class just because you can. You will get behind and you will be confused. The professor will give you free days to miss class. Use them wisely. Don’t use them just because you are tired and not feeling that class. Use this: If you have a fever or throwing up then miss but email your teacher saying you will miss and ask them what there office hours are so you can get the work that you missed in class.
The third thing is, sit in the front row! I know that it is awkward to walk to the front of class on the first day, but do it. So then you are not stuck behind the really tall guy and you have to stick your head out on the aisle. Also it says that most of the people that sit in the front have better grades then anyone in the class (hint hint wink wink). Also you won’t get to see the board, walk to the front with an amazing view of the board.
I leave you with one final tip, use a planner and time management. I can’t stress to you enough get a planner. You are told and given many important dates that you will need to know. In the syllabus that you are given at the beginning of every semester it has important dates like tests, quizzes, and homework assignments. Spend most of the time during that week setting a schedule of what you study life and homework life will be. Use your planner, make to-do list, and make sure everything is organized.
I am so excited to see what you will accomplish in your college years and I have been very proud of what you have accomplished through out high school. Good luck!
