My Roommate and I Are Not Friends

It's as simple as that.

My Roommate and I Are Not Friends

My roommate and I are not friends; we are not in the same sorority and we don't really hang out with the same group of people. We met because our dads were also college roommates.

We switch off weeks buying groceries, cleaning out our bathroom, and even make each other's bed on occasion. But, again, my roommate and I are not friends.

We surprise one another with cookies, grocery store sushi (it's actually really good), and any kind of fresh fruit. But, still, my roommate and I are not friends.

She took care of me when I was sick; buying me a McDouble, Saltines, and Sprite. She stayed by my side until I felt better. But, again, my roommate and I are not friends.

We watch Netflix together every night like clockwork before we go to bed. I don't know how I will be able to fall asleep without her once our freshman year in the dorms are over. But, my roommate and I are not friends.

We may have some funny memories. Including, accidentally ordering pizza from a Domino's three states away. Still, my roommate and I are not friends.

I say this because it simply is the truth; my roommate and I are not friends. To call her that would be an understatement of what she is to me. My roommate is not my friend; she is my family.

We do not necessarily run around with the same people. But at the end of a crazy night or a hard test, she is the first person I want to tell. We also did not join the same sorority. As hard as it was for us not to pref the same house, we knew what was best for ourselves, and by making that choice some of her sisters have become my very good friends.

Before I left home for college, I was worried that I would not like being surrounded by people all the time; I was fearful I would not have much privacy. However, I am happy to say this is not the case. Every time I walk into our dorm room, I hope she's home.

So this one is for you, Anna. I cannot imagine my freshman (and every year to come) without you. From move-in day, you have been with me to jam to Asher Roth's "I Love College" and Becky G's "Singing in the Shower," to endure the dreaded rush week, to complete every season of Criminal Minds (in six weeks), and to be by my side in any situation that good ole' college throws at us.

I cannot believe that our first year at college is coming to a close, but just remember that you are not my friend. You are, and always will be: family.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
