MAJOR SPOILER ALERT: If you have not yet seen the first episode of the new "Fuller House" now on Netflix, please understand I will be discussing some of the things that the characters say and do. Continue reading at your own risk.
Who doesn't love the classic series, "Full House?" With its quirky charm and life lessons, "Full House" was a staple television show for all families of the '80s and '90s. However, does its new spin-off, "Fuller House," live up to all the hype? Here is my list of pros and cons after watching the pilot episode of "Fuller House."
Cons:
1. The characters have to explain their current status not only to the audience, but to each other, as well.
Let me first say, I definitely understand this was somewhat necessary for the characters to announce their current occupations, living situations and so on, but it just left me feeling kind of awkward. For example, Danny and Becky have to "remind" D.J. of the name of their new talk show, Jesse explains he is now a music composer for a soap opera, Stephanie shares she is a D.J. in London and Joey talks about how he does 10 comedy shows per week in Las Vegas. I mean, they're all family and close friends, don't they call each other every once in a while to share news like this, or don't they at least have Facebook to update everyone?
2. The type of humor used reminds me a lot of Disney Channel.
You can easily tell this new show is directly aimed at the young millennials who grew up watching "Full House." While "Full House" was suited for families with both adults and children, "Fuller House" feels more like a show for teenagers. It seems somehow cheesier and goofier than the original, but at the same time, I also know that spin-off shows are notorious for this.
3. D.J. Tanner's situation in "Fuller House" is way too similar to Danny's situation in "Full House."
D.J. recently lost her husband, she has three young children (who are all the same gender) and now she needs her sister and best friend to help her raise her boys because she is struggling. Sound familiar?
Pros:
1. The references made are very modern and updated for the 21st century.
Many of these references actually made me LOL, like when Kimmy uses the phrase "dropped acid," when D.J.'s middle son, Max, mentions how "Donald Trump" is a bad word and when Becky asks Jesse if they could have another baby, Jesse replies, "Becky, you know that ship has sailed. In fact, it sunk. All seamen lost." The original "Full House" would have never said these kinds of things in the '90s!
2. The stab at the Olsen twins was amazing.
When Danny mentions how Michelle is "busy in New York running her fashion empire" and the entire cast on screen glares into the camera for a solid 10 seconds, I lost it. I am so glad the cast decided to do this during the pilot episode. Back when "Fuller House" was just a rumor, I hoped every single character would return to the series. Thanks for ruining that dream, Mary-Kate and Ashley.
3. The spin-off seems very cute and fun overall.
Although slightly cheesy and awkward in the beginning, as the first episode continued, it became better and better. I've always had a true love for "Full House," and I have a feeling this love will continue into "Fuller House" as I watch the rest of the season!
