Canis lupus familiaris is better known to us as Man's Best Friend. Animals, to me, exhibit a kind of innocence not found anywhere else on this earth. They are unfazed by things such as politics and the media. They are not (usually) subjected to the cruelty of humans, and are often treated as members of the family. Dogs especially are prime examples of loyalty. They do not possess the frequent sassiness of cats and are usually simply sweet creatures.
I am a proud "dog person" and plan to own many of my own in the future. I was privileged to grow up with some great family dogs in my home. Puppies of all kinds bring me joy, but I have a special bond with my own English Setter. We got him when he was very little and I feel like I have already been a dog mom watching him grow up. I may not be home to see him very much, but when I am he is always excited to see me! Here is what I would say to him if I was the dog whisperer and he could actually understand human speech.
Dear Winslow,
You are the best dog in the world. Other dogs may be cuter or smarter than you, but you are mine, so I love you more!
I'm sorry I'm not home very often. I try to take you on more walks and give you more treats when I am. I hope Mom, Dad, and Heidi spoil you sometimes like I always do.
I am so proud that you finally learned how to Sit and Shake. Even if you will only do it when I have a treat ready for you, it is still very impressive.
I sometimes wish Mom and Dad would get you a little sibling so you weren't as lonely during the day. But then you might get a little jealous because he would be smaller and cuter than you.
Remember when you were a puppy? I'm so glad we were able to house-train you. You were the cutest puppy ever, and you're so big now!
It is OK that you were supposed to be a hunting dog and can barely point to birds. You make up for it with sweetness. We got so lucky to have a dog like you.
It is also OK that you don't want to cuddle with me when I try to cuddle with you. You only jump on me when I'm not expecting it. But it is cute, and better than nothing.
I hope you aren't jealous when I spend a lot of time with friends and come home smelling like their dogs or cats. I love my human friends and they need attention too, just like you do.
I'm sorry I won't be home much this summer. I know Mom, Dad and Heidi will walk you regularly and play with you outside on occasion. And you'll get lots of treats for being a Good Boy.
Just know that you're my best friend and I'll love you forever!
