Anyone that knows me well knows that I am not one to speak my opinion on things known to others, sometimes because I don't always know all the facts, sometimes because I don't want to start an argument, and sometimes because I just don't have an opinion. This topic is something that I have had to think long and hard on, and I apologize a head of time for anyone that this might make angry.
So lets talk. I think that when we look at police officers we almost act like there isn't a human behind that uniform, we act like they are not allowed to make in mistake or act in any way like a human. This is wrong, those men and women who put on those uniforms are just that, men and women. Just like you and I because they make judgment calls everyday, ours could be what route are we going to take to work, what we are going to make for dinner, and how much studying we should do before the test. Those judgment calls are ones that don't really have much of an effect. The judgment calls that police officers make are literally life or death, they consist of do I want to take the risk and see if that gun is fake, or do I want to shoot now and ask questions later? Now, of course they are trained to look at very situation and think it through, they are told numerous times what the laws are, what they should do, what they can do, and what is wrong. Now, with that being said and knowing all of that I have a feeling they don't really have enough time to think through every possible outcome. To get a better society we need to learn that we are people, everyone will make a mistake, or make the wrong call on things and yes sometimes that will result in the end of someone's life.
I know that there are cases where the cop has clearly been in the wrong, well maybe not clearly but the majority believe that they are. I also have never been minority, I have grown up in a good home, had the things I needed, and I never had to wonder if we were going to have food that night. I can't pretend to understand what that would feel like, or how it would feel to be a minority. However, I don't think that that should matter. I want to ask people what their opinions would be if the men that have been killed by police in the media lately would feel if it was someone like me, a white privileged kid. Racism is a problem because we as a society don't stop talking about it. If everyone were to just mind their business and picture everyone as an equal person regardless of color , this wouldn't be a problem. I understand that the chance of this happening is slim to none, and I understand that there is racism in the world and that that is a problem. Another question that I have is people get upset because they think that white cops are racist and that is why these things have happened but isn't it racist to talk poorly about the "White Privileged", and "white cops are corrupt" and "because they are black" is that not wrong too? Is it not wrong to accuse every white cop you see as someone who is racist if they pull over anyone that isn't white? TO say that they are bad for doing their jobs? I'm not trying to say that those things don't happen but white people aren't the only ones who have an issue with be racist.
I think that we have to stop comparing ourselves to others, and I believe that the moment that that happens we can start being happier in the world that we live in. I think that we need to take the time to understand that this world is also never going to be perfect and we need to understand that we will never be able to have an answer to everything that happens, especially when people may get hurt or when people are in danger. I'll leave you with this, we are all humans, no matter what occupation, color, or social status. We need to work to put things like that behind us.
