For the past few weeks, all I've seen on the news, in the newspaper, on Facebook and on the internet are words of hatred. I see stories of hate towards various presidential candidates. I see stories of people unnecessarily hurting other people. I see stories full of false assumptions and a sense of entitlement. What I see, and that I am sad to admit, is unnecessary meanness and disrespect. And it's something that is very hard for me to understand.
We are all people. Yes, we are all the same. Sure, we are individuals and we have different personalities and different living situations, but in the end, we are all people. We are all humans. And every human, no matter what their race, gender, background, social status, age, sexual orientation, religion or political party deserves to be treated with love and respect. Every single person deserves to be treated with compassion. No one person deserves to be loved more or respected more than any other person. We are equals.
And as people, it is our duty to love one another. When our fellow human, our fellow person, our fellow individual, falls down, it is our job to pick them up. When they need our help, we should be there to help them. We should do so just because we know that we would like their help if we were in the same situation. We are all humans and we need one another. We need to love one another. We need to show compassion to our fellow human beings.
As people, we should respect one another. The minute we refer someone by something other than our equal, we are no longer respecting them. Labels. Yes, labels. Something we use on a daily basis to disrespect one another. We need to refer to others as our fellow humans not by their race, their sexual orientation, their age, their gender, their religion or their political affiliation, just a few of the things we use to divide ourselves as a species. And although, yes, many of these things make us who we are, we should not be disrespected for the things that we are comprised of. We should be respected regardless of our uniquenesses and our individual personalities. Because in the end, we are all humans who deserve to be respected.
And to respect or love one another does not mean that we always must agree with every single thing that they do or say. It means that we must respect that they have a different opinion than they do. It means that we do not need to attack them for having a different opinion than we do. It means that we do not need to hate them for having a different opinion than we do.
We are all humans. We are all people. And as humans, we deserve to be respected by our fellow humans. We are equals. I have a very hard time understanding why we cannot behave as such. I hope that one day, when I open my laptop, I'll be able to see stories of happiness, love, peace and respect. I hope that I'll be able to turn on the radio in my car and hear stories of people helping people. I hope that we, as a society, as a people, as a species, will be able to show our fellow humans basic respect, dignity and love. Because as a species, we do not deserve anything less.
My wish for this world is to abolish hatred and anger. We have wasted more than enough time and energy on disrespect and separation, which is precious energy and time we could have spent bettering the world and our society.
