Many kids grow up thinking Spiderman and Superman are the coolest characters on the planet. I mean who can blame them, right? These characters spend time fighting off bad guys and saving the world. They have awesome powers that make them extraordinary, such as being able to shoot spiderwebs from their wrist or super human strength. These characters are marketed all around the world in movies, TV shows, comics, and paraphernalia. They are invincible. Then there are the other superheroes, the modern day ones. These superheroes include firefighters, doctors, missionaries, and policemen. These people wake up every single day trying to make a change in the world and try to do something better than what they did the day before.
I used to believe that, until I started getting older. I realized that I had my own superhero in my household. No, it wasn’t my dog, stuffed animal, or homemade pizza. This character magically finds things missing in my room and sometimes when I least expect it, the room becomes magically clean. This character answers and comes to my rescue any time I cry for help. This character supports me in every single endeavor I go through. This character has an "eye in the back of their head," always aware of what is going on around them. This character is special, since this character is my mom. My mom, instead of waking up every single day trying to make the world a better place, wakes up every day trying to make the world, my life, my family's lives, her employee's lives, and her own life better than the previous day. I know what you are thinking. Is my mom as cool as Spiderman or Superman? Probably not. My mom isn’t as cool as me either. She sure is stronger than any other superhero I've seen.
My mom gets even cooler as I get older. The older I become, the more clothes I realize I can fit into that my mom owns. The older I get, the more time I spend recognizing that I have put her through a lot and she still loves me unconditionally. My mom pushed two children out of her body, has traveled the country, lived in Chicago on her own, and went to all the cool concerts with bands that weren’t even cool yet. Every day I admire my mother more. My mom takes time out of her day to answer all of my phone calls, deals with “hangry” me when I am stressed, listens when I vent about who I like, and sends me funny cat videos at all times of the day. She sends care packages to me in college and made a Snapchat just so she could send me videos of things she sees and does at home. My mom always laughs at my jokes, no matter how bad they are. Sometimes, she tells a funny one too!
There are also times in my life where serious things happen and I always go to my mother first. My mom supported me when friends have passed away, serious relationships turned into break ups, and when I decided to transfer schools after my freshman year in college. My mother is so strong and no matter what, she still keeps going. I was selfish at a young age and didn’t even realize that my mother was doing some amazing things. My mom works full time and spends time taking my brother to all of his sports and high school events, which may not sound too impressive. Yet, my mom is currently on top of it all going to college to receive her masters in psychology, where she will be working with other people to talk about their emotions and work through them.
Thank you for all you do mom. You truly are my superhero and you aren’t the out of date superhero either. I hope one day I get to be just as calm, optimistic and supportive to my children as you are to me. You are my role model and I am so lucky God gave me you. Since you are my mom though, I know you are thinking, "You are right, but I am so lucky God gave me you." Love you mom.
