“Why don’t you ever pick out something that isn’t black?” A favorite line that my mom tends to drop while we are out shopping for clothes, since my closet is comprised of 75% black clothing, 15% gray clothing, 7% white clothing and 3% color clothing. She began to notice the problem back in high school when my laundry pile on laundry day only consisted of black jeggings and black shirts and sweaters.
All of my life I have had a bit of a love affair with the color black. From the color of my phone to the color of my coffee, a deep love with the absence of color is evident, but of all these things, my most cherished item is black clothing.
Black clothes have a way of empowering me to be the best I can be. Olivia Pope, from ABC’s Scandal, is defined by her power color of white. In my case, my power color is black. I can wear all black and be professional or wear it on a date at the classiest restaurant and still look elegant and timeless, not to add its magical slimming effects.
I cannot even begin to sum up all of the times I have been told that I look gothic, or how many times I have been asked if I am depressed or extremely emotional. For anyone who thinks that wearing black is morbid and/or boring, I challenge you to think differently.
Wearing black is chic, sophisticated, powerful, a defining statement and most of all, at the end of the day, it is incredibly easy to wear. No matter how tall or how short, how curvy or how thin, how young or how old, black is a color that everyone is able to wear flawlessly.
Here is a small list of reasons why wearing black is the best choice to wear for any occasion.
- Black is very hard to stain and permanently damage. Coming from an Italian family, I can rest peacefully knowing that the red sauce stain from dinner is not going to be noticeable the next time I wear that shirt or pair of pants.
- You are able to look glamorous no matter what you are doing or where you are. Whether you are on the Oscar Red Carpet posing in front of the press and paparazzi, or lounging around, studying for an exam, with your hair in a messy bun and mascara smudged under your eyes, you can be assured that you still look like a royal princess.
- You can add just about any color as a statement piece. Fuchsia, emerald, mustard, cherry red or electric blue, all colors compliment a black outfit, and add a “pop” to your outfit.
Black clothes are more than just pieces I throw on each morning before I start my day, they are the direct reflection of my personality, my personal brand I embody and most of all, the thing that makes me, me. Simply stated, black clothes are perfect in every way imaginable.
