A best friend is more than just another friend. A best friend is someone you greet with an insult, call at 3 a.m. when you're drunk and want to share a laugh, and want to spend every second of the day with. But when best friends are separated by a 200 mile gap, things aren't so great anymore.
My best friend and I go to school 177 miles apart. I remember that dreadful day when we said goodbye over the summer, and I've been counting down the days until I can drive up to her front door and pick her up for our morning bagel run. I've never had a long-distance relationship of any sort, but going to college has taught me a lot about what it means to be a friend and how to uphold the relationships that are truly important to me.
First, I realized I didn't need to see someone every minute of every day to have a strong, healthy relationship with them. In fact, separation is a really good thing. It gives you time to be an individual, explore your interests, and meet new people. It also makes you appreciate the time you do spend with your best friend even more, because you don't have the luxury of seeing them all the time. Coming home from school on breaks is always exciting not only because I get to be back home but because my best friend and I get to challenge ourselves and see just how much crazy stuff we can do in a very tight time window. No, I don't see her all the time, but when I do see her it's like we were never apart.
Second, I have a much deeper appreciation for my friendship and the beautiful things she brings into my life. From the moment I met my best friend, I found her spunky energy infectious, her laugh and smile the perfect compliments to her adorable frame and warm heart. We clicked immediately and have been inseparable ever since. She's been there to support me through countless ups and downs, made so many memories together, and never failed to put a smile on my face. While being apart is incredibly difficult, it makes me appreciate the special moments we've shared and thank God for bringing her into my life.
Lastly, being separated by 177 miles has made me realize just how much I love my best friend. She's brought me so many good things and continues to brighten my days and enrich my life in ways I never could have imagined.
I love you, Ema!
