"You look mad." - Friend
"Is something bothering you?" -Friend
" Smile sweetheart" - Random food court guy
"You're to pretty to be pouty all the time" - Guy in my class
These are just a few examples as to what I heard so far this week. After reading those you are probably thinking something along the lines of "okay, so someone is just moody so what?" I am actually not a moody person or unapproachable person, more times than not I am genuinely happy and I am a huge extrovert. if I am happy most of the time then why do people say those kind of things to me? - The answer is quite simple, I have a severe case of Resting Bitch Face syndrome or commonly known as RBF.
RBF is a common thing most girls have it but, some worse than others. I am unfortunately the one who has it worse than others. My RBF causes some struggles in my life such as making friends, who wants to be friends with the girl who looks pissed off all the time? - not me. Another prime example, is when people are trying to talk to me or tell me a story and when I am fully listening but, according to my face I am uninterested in what you are saying to me.
In order to counteract these side effects of RBF, I always try to smile (no matter how strange I look) at people either if I am at work, on campus or just out and about around town. I try to make myself look more approachable all the time at any cost, even if it means saying hi to random people on campus. Don't get me wrong there are some benefits to RBF, the best thing about it is if you are busy doing something and do not want to the bothered, just let your face relax back into it's natural state- no one will want to bother you. Another good example is when random men or women want to hit on you and you are not about it your face will easily show it - problem solved.
Having RBF is not the end of the world at all but it can be annoying do not get me wrong. It is just one of the things you have to go with. Just keep this is in mind if someone does look unapproachable or mad, they may not always be. It gets annoying having people ask if I am mad all the time but, I would rather have people ask than not. It shows they care and, if something happens to be bothering you now have someone to talk to and turn that RBF off.
