My little fur baby, Gigi, just turned six months old the other day, and as I was sitting down wishing him a happy half birthday, I began to think back to life before a cat. My four months that I have spent with this cat, have been quite a roller coaster ride, and honestly something I was never prepared for. So as a little celebration for his half birthday today, I will be giving you guys nine things that I have learned about having a cat.
1. The late night bathroom breaks
So like any other living creature, cats have to use the bathroom. Trust me when I say this, if you have a bathroom that is directly connected to your bedroom, you NEED odor killing litter. You do not want to wake up in the middle of that kick-butt dream and get a big whiff of kitty poo, trust me. Get that odor eliminating kitty litter and save yourself some agony.
2. We LITERALLY can not have nice things
If you have ever had a cat, you can back me up when I say this: almost all of your things that you have up on a table in your room, or on a tv stand, will wind up on the ground at some point in time. Gigi loves knocking things off of tables and hearing them crash onto the floor. I don't know what it is with cats or the sick thrill that they get from knocking your stuff to the ground, but they love it. Just be aware.
3. Be prepared to have your face be used as a seat
This. Just this one alone could be the one thing that I probably knew would happen at some point, but I didn't think that it would be almost an every night occurrence. I think that Gigi is coming up to just give me sweet kitty snuggles, and he licks my face once, then turns around and shoves his butt into my face. Thank you Gigi, but I think I am going to have to pass.
4. Having a cat is like having a child
I am pretty sure all of us know this one, but I thought I would say it anyway. I honestly can't turn around for a few seconds without Gigi trying to attempt something that would end with him hurting himself. Earlier today in fact, he almost singed his tail hairs off when jumping up onto my television stand. If I had gotten up and grabbed him only a few seconds later, his tail would have been on fire.
5. The small things always need to be appreciated
Before I adopted Gigi, I had a tendency to go through my day and not stop to appreciate the smaller things in life. I got used to not taking time to notice how nice it was to just sit outside, close your eyes, and breath. However, watching my cat sit in the sun that shines through the windows, and not care about the chaos that ensues around him, just reminds me each day to stop, and take some time to appreciate the smaller things.
6. You can never have too many kitty cuddles
I can't tell you how many times that I have come home from a rough day with classes, and just not wanted anything to do with anyone. However the second that Gigi jumps up on my bed and curls up into a ball on my chest, it just makes it so much better. That is until he decides that my nose would be the perfect cat treat.
7. Be prepared to have several kitty scratches on your arms
Beware if you plan on playing with them, you most likely will end up with your arms and hands being used as a chew toy or a scratching post. So if you plan on playing with your kitty, just beware that this may occur a lot, I suggest wearing long sleeves.
8. Cat's hate getting their nails trimed almost as much as they hate water
Each month there is one day that is set for Gigi to get his nails trimmed. When he sees the clippers in my hands he immediately sprints in the other direction. When I finally manage to catch him and start clipping, he cries constantly, and bites furiously at my hands. When he gets done, he almost never wants anything to do with me for the rest of the night.
9. Fur babies are the best
After only having Gigi for four months, I have decided that my life wouldn't be the same without him. I know that four months doesn't seem like a whole lot, but there is a big spot in my heart for this little guy. He really is just like a part of my little family and I don't know what I would do without him.
