A countless number of times I've had people say things to me like, "are you sure psychology is the best idea? It's kind of a dying field," or "majoring in business would open a lot more career paths for your future", as if I wasn't aware of what I was choosing to do with my life. I made the decision to major in psychology because it is what I love. Learning how the human brain works is so fascinating to me, and it's already been extremely beneficial to my everyday life.
Sure, maybe majoring in something a little more broad would open up more doors for me when I'm looking for my lifelong career in the future. I've always been told, though, that if you find something you love to do, to stick with it. Don't worry about the money, or what other people think, because if you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life.
Granted, I do find myself picking apart every person that I talk to, just wondering what could possibly be going on inside the little world in their head. And I'm sure my friends are tired of hearing all of the psychological terms I throw at them regarding the emotions they're feeling. However, psychology hasn't only helped me understand other people, but myself, as well.
Being able to comprehend the things going on inside of my own head and knowing how to deal with them has made my life so much easier. My favorite class I've ever taken was a positive psychology class, and it was based entirely around the flourishing of your brain and how to react to negative emotions in a way that would have a positive outcome.
Even if psychology isn't your major, I highly recommend taking a class or two just to help better understand how your brain, as well as the brains around you, work.
