My Idea Of Time Travel

A story of how and when I'd like to time travel.

On a recent essay I was given in English class, the teacher proposed a question: if I could time travel, what time period would I go to and why. Here's my response.

The one science mystery that has always intrigued me is time travel. Researchers have yet to truly figure it out, and I do not think they will know everything about it until much later in the century. However, if I could time travel, it would be a dream for me. I would go back in time, probably to circa 1950’s and explore the world as it was.

Since I was a young girl, I have always felt like I belonged in a different era. I would get dolls that were dressed in petticoats and fancy dresses from the 1800’s and always pretend that I was of some royalty in England. Of course, it was every girl’s dream to be a princess, but I wanted to be one from sixty years ago. I have always loved history, so experiencing that in real life would be an actual dream come true.

As far as where I would go, that would be very difficult to choose because every aspect of history is extremely fascinating. However, I believe the early to mid-1900’s would be perfect. This is because so many new things were abounding during this time with the Industrial Revolution still booming. Everyone was trying to become someone new, to start over. I relate to this because I have always dreamed big and thought that I could change the world somehow. I am not sure if this will actually happen, but being able to breathe the same air as the innovators of this century would be extraordinary.

However, I do not believe I would stay in America. I think somewhere such as England or France would be very interesting during this time period. I would travel to the city of London in the 1930’s and smell the soon-to-be polluted air. I would see the bustling people getting to their jobs as factory workers, trying their hardest to make a living. I would walk the streets of the city and meet as many people as I could and talk to them about their lives and learn about their standard of living.

Finally, if I could I would stay in this time period forever. The simplicity of life draws me in like a moth to a flame. I grew up in a world of very advanced technology, which I appreciate, but I have also become so attached to. I would most likely introduce the people back then to some new technology, especially in medicine, to improve lives and the health industry. However, living a world where this technology does not exist intrigues me because I would only have to focus on life, not my phone. The standard back then was to work hard and try to be innovative. Having the opportunity to time travel would give me a chance to meet this standard.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"

While this question trend can get annoying, there are a couple of pros to having RBF.

Yify

Another day, another Elle Woods comment. Can’t us blondes get through the day without someone harping at us over the typical stereotypes about who we are? I never understood why a person was judged based upon the hair color they were born with, or the hair color they choose to have (unless you dye your hair blue like Kylie Jenner, I’m still trying to understand why that’s a trend). Nevertheless, as it should be assumed, not everyone is the same. Not all blondes like bright colors and Lilly Pulitzer, and not all blondes claim to identify with Marilyn Monroe. I think the best suggestion to give to people before they make such radical claims is to stop judging a book by its cover. Or in this case, stop judging a blonde by her hair color.
