Lessons are learned all throughout your life. Your mom, dad, aunts, uncles, teachers, and friends all play a role, but no one can teach you the lessons that your grandma can. Besides, who do you think taught all those other people the same lessons?
I've been close with my grandma ever since I can remember. I could not be anymore thankful for everything she has taught me and look forward to all the lessons that are still to come.
1. My grandma taught me patience is key.
We have all heard the famous saying, "Good things come to those who wait," but I truly believe it. Forcing things and rushing things will only lead you to disappointment and disaster.
2. My grandma taught me being genuine is how you get through life.
Being genuine is so important. No one likes someone who pretends to be something they are not. If you are completely yourself, people will respect you a whole lot more. Stay true to your beliefs and morals, because they are what make you genuine.
3. My grandma taught me that people will leave no matter what.
People will walk in and out of your life, and sometimes you won't have a clue why. They may disappear suddenly without reason. It may not have anything to do with something you did, but sometimes it does. It is important to remember that there are so many other people in this world. Losing people does not necessarily mean anything about your character.
4. My grandma taught me that it is OK to ask for help.
No one can go through life alone. No matter who you are you will always need help in some way. It is perfectly OK to reach out to your friends, family, and coworkers for help. They will be happy to do it. There is no shame in admitting you need someone, even if it's just someone to talk to.
5. My grandma taught me to be the best person I can be.
Being the best you can be is so important. Use your own discretion to define what that means, but to me it is staying true to who I am and making sure I am happy with who that person is. It also means creating lasting friendships, doing well in a subject that I am passionate about, and doing things that make me truly happy.
6. My grandma taught me that family is everything.
This seems like a common sense thing, but that is exactly why I chose to include it. Family does not always mean blood, anyone who you are close to and has stuck with you is family. Family is everywhere and they will always be there for you no matter what.
7. My grandma taught me that being nice is always the answer.
"Kill 'em with kindness," she always says. I completely agree, being nice is key to being respected. No one respects someone who is rude, unkind, or mean. Kindness will always prevail in any realm. People way take advantage of your kindness sometimes, but I still choose the high road every time.
8. My grandma taught me to think of others.
Putting others first is something she takes pride in, therefore I have continued this belief. My needs are usually second to those I care about. Helping others is what I strive to do.
9. My grandma taught me that some things don't really matter.
Whether it is an embarrassing text you sent, a boy who blew you off, or a paper you got a bad grade on, she always reminds me that in the long run they don't matter. They won't change your life completely and you have the choice to move on from them. Sometimes situations feel like the end of the world, but I promise you they will lose some of that feeling as time goes on.
10. My grandma taught me, most importantly, I am worth it.
She constantly reminds me that I am worth it. I am worth so much more than a lost friendship, a bad grade, a hard time, or anything else that may get me down. She reminds me that I have a bright future and I am headed straight down the right path to achieving anything.
Thank you so much grandma for teaching me these and so many other important lessons. I am the person I am today because of you. You are one of the biggest inspirations in my life. I love you so very much.
