High School Made Me The Person I Am Today

But hey, its only the beginning.

Looking back onto my high school career, I really have accomplished a lot and challenged myself in school and extracurricular activities. From cheerleading, drill team, figure skating, student council, DECA, fashion club and a brand new job, I was sure to keep myself busy!

Figure skating holds a special place in my heart and after 11 years of freezing cold morning practices, millions of falls, off-ice conditioning and horrible blisters, nothing compares to the feeling I still get when stepping onto the ice. In my 10th year of my Figure Skating career, I made it to nationals with my Theater on Ice team competing in Massachusetts, and a second time for Showcase Nationals in California. My freshman year, I placed first in all of my state competitions for a consecutive season collecting all gold medals.

Along with figure skating I've been a high school cheerleader and a part of my school's drill team. Cheering under those Friday night lights during my school's best football season was amazing and dancing on the football field during halftimes with my team brings back such great memories. Everyone always tells you to stay involved in high school and so, having always wanted to try cheerleading and dance, high school gave me the opportunity to do both while keeping up with skating.

Junior year I became apart of my school's student council class and realized what an amazing organization it really was. It was completely student-run and gave students the opportunity to be leaders on campus. This year, I became president and throughout my high school career it's probably the thing I'm most proud of. Becoming president has helped me to grow as a person and learn how to become a stronger leader. Each and every project we've accomplished has touched my heart and, without such an amazing group of students, none of it would have been possible.

This year alone we've accomplished so much. We were put in charge of our homecoming candlelight pep rally, a tradition where our whole school comes together for a parade celebrating each club and organization, and of course pumping up our student body for our homecoming game! We also threw a Halloween party for a local orphanage and helped out with a clothing and toiletry drive to get them set for the school year. This year we raised over $1000 for a new organization that is starting up within our town called PAC, which was created to help the families of cancer patients with house bills, hospital bills and day-to-day needs. We started the "Dude Be Nice" campaign around our campus and surprised a couple hardworking teachers with treats just to brighten their days and to let them know how appreciated they are. We also started a tradition for our school to appreciate the veterans within our community. We held an outdoor service and raised money for an organization helping veterans find jobs and adapt to their new lives after their return.

I also became president of my school's first ever FIDM fashion club. I met such amazing girls and it was awesome to be around people who had the same interests and passions as me. Although our club started later in the year, we accomplished a lot for our school, community and as a club. We held a clothing drive for the flood victims in the greater Houston area, having tremendous support from our whole school. We also put on our school's first ever fashion show called “Say YES To The Dress,” where we helped seniors sell their used gowns to students at our school for discounted prices. At the start of the year, I was able to fly to San Francisco for FIDM Fashion Club Day and learned a lot of information and creative ideas to benefit our club. San Fransisco was amazing and I met friends I still talk to today!

This year I also participated in DECA for the first time, competing at mini competitions, regionals, and state! I met a totally new group of friends and got to travel with them all the way to San Antonio for competitions.

With so many responsibilities at school, senioritis still hasn't gotten a chance to kick in. Luckily, only having three core classes this year, I've really had time to focus more on projects for our campus and just ways to help our community! These four years have gone by so fast and it's crazy to think the next thing on the check off list is graduation!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
