My First Year of College, As Told Through Music

Cherishing memories through music

12

Music has the ability to express emotions and feelings when words aren't enough.

1. “A moment of love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry, our rights, our wrongs” –Sweet Disposition, Temper Trap

As I entered my first year, I felt like my hopes were best summed up in this song.

2. “I’m ready” –AJR, I’m Ready

After listening to this song a fair amount first semester, I must admit it gets annoying quickly. However, it also pumped me up for anything I was nervous about. Some mornings if I was especially tired I’d play this song while I was getting ready

3. “God, tell us the reason youth is wasted on the young. It’s hunting season and this lamb is on the run. Searching for meaning, But are we all lost, trying to light up the dark?” –Adam Levine, Lost Stars

During periods of loss, self-doubt and significant periods of sorrow, I turned on this song. I've shed more than a few tears while listening to it and it has also allowed me to ponder more serious and important questions about my life.

4. “We are not what you think we are. We are golden.”

-roommate and I had a special thing of sharing music

5. “I won’t worry my life away” –Jason Mraz, The Remedy (I Won't Worry)

on letting go and giving myself a break

6. “’Cause I still got a lot of fight left in me” -Rachel Platten, Fight Song

These one has two meanings: Relay for Life and reminding me how much I love my family

7. “Cause I wonder sometimes about the outcome” –John Mayer, Why Georgia

Changing my major

8. “Every night with us is like a dream/The best people in life are free” –Taylor Swift, New Romantics

-making friends and how everyone loves Taylor Swift

9. “I’m doing just fine. I’m always landing on my feet. In the nic of time. And by the skin of my teeth” -Lee Dewyze, Sweet Seredipity

looking back on freshman year

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
