TO MY FELLOW ATLANTA PEOPLE: We need to do better.
I don't want to hear another name added to the list of those who overdosed. It is so often that you see someone posting about a friend who was taken way too soon, and it is truly heart breaking, even if you have not had someone personally close to you pass from a drug related death, you know of someone who has. Of course this is not only an Atlanta problem, but we as a community know that its bad as ever, and I know things can change.
This is my plea:
There is so much ahead of us, college, jobs, marriage, new beginnings, so much to look forward to in life. If you have someone close to you that is struggling with an addiction, or if you are personally struggling, do not be afraid to get help. Do not be naive and think that nothing bad can happen to you just because it hasn't yet. Do not think that no one cares, because they do. Some drugs are like Russian roulette, you just don't know when its going to turn on you.
Recently, 11Alive news released a mini series informing about the recent explosion of overdoses called The Heroin Triangle , which was a real eye opener for me. These young people were not always the "troubled", these are your peers, neighbors, friends, it is effecting all walks of life. The deaths have become almost like a widespread epidemic, we all know its happening, but do nothing about it.
Honestly I do not know the answer to fixing this, but for now -
Help one another and be there for each other, we are better than this.
If you are ever in the predicament were you are with someone that needs medical help due to using a substance or drug, there is the Medical Amnesty Law in place for Georgia, where you will not get in trouble nor will the person you are helping.
