I was recently organizing my files on Google Drive and came across a file that I hadn’t seen in a long time. The file is called “My Dream Guy.”
During my senior year of high school, many months after leaving a toxic relationship, I was asked by one of my followers on Tumblr: “What is your dream guy?” Many of my friends at the time agreed that I have a type and to some extent I do. But to describe my type in one sentence is nearly impossible. So to answer that question I sat down and wrote up a list, which included physical and personality traits as well as things the guy would be willing to do.
I don’t recall if my answer was ever officially posted on my Tumblr, but here it is:
“Describe your dream guy.
My dream guy would have either blond or brown hair, and it doesn't matter what eye color but I would love a guy with blue eyes. He would be kind, caring, gentle, and strong. He would be ambitious and passionate.
I want a guy who is fit; takes good care of himself.
A guy that can play instruments and/or sing well.
A guy that is willing to cook, even if he sucks at it.
A guy that will write me love letters even if he doesn't like his handwriting.
A guy that will try to write me poems even if he thinks they're not any good.
A guy who likes or loves dogs and/or cats.
A guy who is great around children.
A guy who is taller than me and likes to hold my hand.
A guy who is willing to work out with me.
A guy who knows how to dress sharp.
A guy who enjoys reading.
A guy who can go to the mall and into all the stores I want to go in and not complain.
A guy who will spontaneously get me my favorite flowers even if there's no occasion.
A guy who can be spontaneous, especially sexually.
A guy who is book smart, who isn't ashamed to be both the student and teacher.
A patient, sensitive, intelligent guy.
An attentive guy who is romantic. A gentleman. Rather well rounded.
A guy who shows his affection and is playful.
A guy with a good sense of humor.
An amazing kisser.
A guy who loves physical affection and enjoys giving hugs.
A guy who has a similar taste in music as me.”
Now, looking back at this, I know that my ideal guy is unrealistic. I’d be lucky to find a guy that had at least some of these qualities. I also think that this list could go on and on. But I shouldn’t rely on a list I made in high school when thinking about a possible romantic interest.
I'm almost 20 and I haven’t been on many dates, but when I find the right guy, I know I’ll be happy and will care about the qualities he does possess and not the ones he doesn’t.
