Most people believe that Las Vegas is solely for gambling, sightseeing, and 21 year olds and older. “It is only enjoyable if you can gamble and drink,” I have heard so many people say, but man, oh man! There are so many other things to do once you venture off the Strip or go to the shows that are scattered throughout all the hotels.
Initially, I thought this trip was mainly going to be me with my mother and my sister, not the directionally-impaired one, lounging around the pool and shopping. I was wrong. So completely wrong. My mother and I flew into Las Vegas Sunday night and went to a sushi burrito bar. It was a weird type of thing, but it was very good.
The next night, she was called in to work at one of her jobs – “MJ Live” at the Stratosphere which features a Michael Jackson tribute performer. She works as a stage manager and is pretty good at her job, if I say so myself. She helps 'Michael' with his costume changes, makes sure the sound check is going all OK, and preparing some of the other set up. I have seen "MJ Live" from three different spots now: backstage, in the audience, and on stage. This is one of my favorite shows in Vegas, and it isn’t biased.
The next day we went shopping, which wasn’t too bad, but I am not all for the shopping aspect of life. On Wednesday, we went to Bally’s and watched “50 Shades! The Parody.” That was interesting. Very funny, but a little scary at some parts. By scary, I mean there was a very obese man dancing in a wrestling suit singing, more like screaming, ‘f-ck!’ Not something you would take your grandmother to do, but also not something most 18 year olds would go to. I was definitely the youngest person there.
On Thursday, we went to “Zarkana” at Aria. This is a Crique Du Soleil show which will be closing next month. The music was fabulous and the acrobatics were amazing. There was not much of a story line for us to follow, or for us to find, but it was still good nonetheless. One of my favorite parts was the Wheel of Death. There were also a lot of illusions that were executed tastefully. There was never too much computer graphics that over played the actors.
Friday, our last true day in Vegas, was spent walking around Towne Square Las Vegas on Las Vegas Boulevard. There were several shops there, including H&M, Charming Charlies, and Old Navy. There is a place called Lollicup Las Vegas that has several different milk teas, slushies, and smoothies. After drinking some yummy coconut milk tea with boba, we went to a club that had an 18 and older night.
Coming from Kansas, I thought I knew what to expect after being to Club Rodeo, but I was wrong. This club, Stoney’s, was full out country. They taught country dances and played really loud music, that is not actually my particular taste in music. The bass was really high, which caught me off-guard while when we first arrived. Overall, it was a fun experience, but it was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime thing.
Going to Las Vegas was a good way to spend my break with my sister and mother and I don’t think I would have gone anywhere else. I would hope next time that I would be able to sit out by the pool more and go swimming.
