Among all the fun and relaxing perks of summer, finally having time to read books for pleasure is one of my favorites. There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book while a summer rainstorm rages on outside, or having the perfect page-turner to make long vacation flights fun. From summer romance to hilarious autobiographies, below is a list of must-reads to check out this summer.
"Amy and Roger's Epic Detour" by Morgan Matson.
This novel is perfect to bring along on vacation, or to read at home in lieu of a trip. Aside from being a ridiculously cute romance, this book will also make you want to plan your own road trip. This book also contains great playlists that can be listened to in or out of a car. Amy’s journey to overcome a personal tragedy as she travels across the country is truly moving. You will experience every emotion possible while reading this book, and you won’t be able to put it down.
"The Summer I Turned Pretty" by Jenny Han.
This is a classic summer romance! Since this novel is set at the beach, it would be paired perfectly with the sound of crashing waves and the feeling of sand between your toes. Fifteen year-old Belly’s summer of self-discovery and first love is so sweet and heartwarming. This feel-good book is a light and fun read, perfect for relaxing by the waterside.
"The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky.
This book is perfect to read while curled up in a cozy chair sipping coffee. Published in the late ‘90s, this novel follows Charlie, a shy but brilliantly observant teen, through his first year in high school as he meets new friends and faces the struggles that come with growing up. Since the whole book is written as letters Charlie sends to a pen pal, readers get a unique perspective on the events of the book, peering straight into Charlie’s troubled, innocently honest thoughts. A great novel perfect for those calm, pensive summer days.
"Yes Please" by Amy Phoeler.
The autobiography of my idol and favorite woman, Amy Phoeler. This multi-talented comedian writes about her life in improv and the entertainment industry, as well as just giving some good advice on how to live life. I’m currently reading this book and loving every second of it, not only because it’s downright hysterical but also because I’m learning so much more about Amy Phoeler, her life before SNL, and all the work she does while not actively performing onstage.
"Modern Romance" by Aziz Ansari.
This book has just been released this summer, and it’s at the top of my to-be-read list. Aziz, also one of my favorite comedians, paired up with NYU sociologist Eric Klineberg to study the way in which dating and romance has changed with the development of technology, introducing things such as dating websites, apps, and even texting as a form of communication. So while this book is most likely hilarious because Aziz adds his own commentary to the main discussion, it’s also informative and relevant, since this is a very interesting topic to the younger generation. I can’t wait to get my hands on this book.
"Paper Towns" by John Green.
One of John Green’s widely-beloved novels, whose movie version is about to hit theatres this summer. This is a fun, quirky read about a boy searching for his neighbor and crush, following clues she left him that lead to a wild chase across Orlando. This book would be particularly fun to read for Rollins students or anyone from the Orlando area, since it describes landmarks that most people familiar with the area should recognize.
"Me, Earl and the Dying Girl" by Jesse Andrews.
The movie version of this book was just released! This is a humorous coming of age story about Greg, a senior in high school who befriends a girl with leukemia and is conned into making a movie about her. This book is interesting, since the main character will actually speak directly to the reader and though one of the main characters has cancer, it’s not exactly a tearjerker. This is a quick and funny read, so there’s still time to catch up before seeing the movie!
"The Fifth Wave" by Rick Yancey.
If none of the books above are really your style, this may be the one for you. This is the only fantasy/sci-fi book I’ve listed for the summer, and it’s because you won’t be able to put it down. In this dystopian, apocalyptic story, Earth has been hit with four waves of disasters, each causing a different catastrophe that managed to wipe off a large portion of the planet’s population. Cassie, our teen protagonist, has survived the first four waves and now is struggling to live in a world where no one can be trusted while waiting for the next wave to arrive. This is an intense, captivating read. The movie based on this book premieres in January of 2016, but you’ll want to read this as soon as possible -- it’s that good.
