It's the most wonderful time of the year: Thanksgiving. The one day out of the year where you can eat until the button on your pants bursts and hits your Uncle Paul in the face. The one day where you can get rounds upon rounds of food until you slip into a food coma and it's all still acceptable. The one day where you can eat your weight in food and not be judged (because everyone else is doing it, too). Eat as much as you can because you won't get another meal like this for a year. Don't just eat anything though, eat these Thanksgiving must-haves.
1. Sausage Cornbread Stuffing
No turkey or Thanksgiving can be complete without stuffing. Out of all the stuffings, though, sausage cornbread stuffing is the best. For even more deliciousness, make homemade cornbread for your stuffing and kick it up a notch with some spicy sausage. This must-have is sure to be a big hit.
2. Buttermilk Biscuits
These fluffy bites of heaven are a personal favorite of mine. They're perfect on their own but if you're feeling a little wild, try to top it with some turkey and gravy. You really just can't go wrong with a classic gravy and biscuits combo.
3. Potatoes
All right, this one is a bit more general because there is no such thing as a wrong way to prepare a potato dish. You could take the cheesy potato route topped with crisp corn flakes, baked or mashed. If you go for mashed, choose red-skin potatoes, the most superior potato. If you go for baked, well don't, a baked potato will never be as good as mashed potatoes. (And don't forget the gravy!)
4. Macaroni and Cheese
Macaroni and cheese is a classic. It's great for every occasion and it's one of the few foods that actually tastes good and comes out of a box. But on this very special day, do yourself the honor of indulging in some homemade mac n cheese. Stick with a classic four-cheese recipe topped with toasted breadcrumbs. If you're looking for a kick, toss some Frank's Red Hot on it and enjoy.
5. Green Bean Casserole
Another Thanksgiving classic. As much as some people don't like vegetables, they're guaranteed to love this. I mean just look at that, how can you not want it?
6. Sweet Potato Casserole
Topped with toasted marshmallows, cornflakes, and pecans, this sweet dish is sure to take your taste buds to a whole new place. Yet again, another perfect use for potatoes.
7. Apple Pie
This dish is known as an American classic. At this point we might as well just call it American Pie (or is that copyrighted?). But seriously, if you don't eat some apple pie on Thanksgiving, then you're just doing yourself an injustice. (It's just wrong, man.)
8. Turkey
Yeah, I mean this one is a given, but what if I told you there are turkey recipes that make it not so bland? For instance, this Bacon Maple Orange Turkey recipe found on Delish has bacon. I repeat, BACON. That word alone settles it: this may be the best turkey recipe ever invented.
And there you have it my friends, if you don't eat at least five of the foods from this list then you're just doing Thanksgiving wrong. Eat well, eat plenty, and pass out. Happy Thanksgiving y'all!
