Sounds of identity
What is your favorite kind of music? why does it belong to that genera? Have you ever contemplated what that might mean about you? I, for one, believe your musical choice reflects your personality, and how you think. Usually pretty accurately too. Music is not universal. There is not a "one type for all." Here is why.
First, let’s start with the sound of a genres and who listens. The sound of a rock song isn’t going to sound the same as a song from Taylor swift, the sound of EDM wont sound like country, etc. For example, I have a strong dislike for country, but I love rock. How can that be? They both have guitars, drums and a singer, but they are so different. The most notable difference is how they play. People who appear happy and active and wear colorful clothes would probably enjoy stuff like EDM, Rap/hiphop, or pop. People who dress in dark colors, and appear cold/distant most likely enjoy rock, or epic. Then you get people who are both, and listen to various types. It’s about the sound though, that is what gets people hooked. Now adays, most songs have a intro before they actually start singing, right? I’m pretty sure some of you have at least deiced based on that intro, right? See? Just depends on the person.
Lyrics, that is second thing that effects a song’s genre and who listens. Rock lyrics don’t have the same effect that pop does, rap doesn’t have lyrics like country or alternative. Lyrics usually reflect something about the singer/band. That something the singer is trying to communicate to the listener, that is what makes the listener feel what the singer did. The singer is showing what they’ve gone through by giving you the words to see what they saw, feel what they felt. The lyrics give the sound meaning, it’s the structure of the musical story. Generally speaking, people view rock and pop, even country to some degree to have different meaning behind their words. A deeper meaning if you will. Whereas things like EDM/techno/dubstep has little meaning in terms of words, it communicates more through sounds, like previously stated.
I’m not hating why people listen to what they view as enjoyable, or what they like. All I am trying to say, is why I think stereotyped/labeled groups listen to the kind of music they do. It’s not a bad thing, in fact I believe it’s truly a unique and beautiful thing. All composers speak the language of music, but only the average individual can translate it’s personal meaning.
