Whether it is rock and roll, pop, rap or even the ever so new infatuation with EDM, the unifying thread that unites us as humans is our connection and love for music. Music is the one thing that distracts us from the outside world. The sound and words reach people on different levels, transcending visual representations to a particular emotion, thought, or message.
Music not only relates to certain moods, but is also a delicate way of communicating to our world. The messages established through the various vibrations and lyrics are not only a representation of us as individuals, but of our culture.
Music is the universal language that takes us places. It is what separates us from reality, taking us to wherever we want to be at that moment in time. For many of us, it is the answer to pain, loss, happiness or love. It is an avenue for personal expression, or a prelude of what is to come.
When people listen to their favorite song, or band, the feeling that is ignited within them is a feeling that instantly makes them feel part of something more significant than themselves. It is an emotional experience, that transforms.
For many, music does not seem to play as big of a role as I make it out to be, but take a second to reflect on how you feel when you listen to your favorite song. Our connection with music is a reflection of our desires, our experiences, even our ability to hold on to something we just can't quite let go of. For many of us, music takes us to a place where we can clearly interpret our world as well as find ourselves.
Throughout generations, the one thing that has yet to die is everyone's passion of music. I know more about the history of music than I do of American history. I may be able to name off more top 40 musicians from the past 50 years than I can American presidents; embarrassing, but true.
As we see the genres of music change through out generations, we have yet to see any genre truly fade away. We all have our throwback playlists with Nelly Furtado, 50 Cent, or Blink 182. When we are with our parents we get a little taste of the oldies -- The Eagles, The Beatles, or Michael Jackson. We have the friends who love the classic rap, or the friends who can quote every line from a One Direction song. And, of course, how could you forget the friend who can listen to EDM any time of the day.
We have seen styles come and go, technology advance in ways never thought possible, social media overrule society, and politics shift, but one the thing that has never changed is the experience and impact of music.
A famous musician once said "one good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain." Bob Marley, a legend in music shares this quote in hopes that people cherish what music has to offer to the world. We may not all agree upon a lot of things; our styles and tastes of music may differ from one another, but we can all agree that music is the answer to pain and is the reflection of love.
Listen to your favorite song, reflect on how it makes you feel, and for those few minutes, wander off to that place where there is no pain, only love.
