Hailee Steinfeld released her music video for "Rock Bottom" from her EP "HAIZ" the morning of March 25, 2016. The original version of the song features only Steinfeld's vocals, but the alternative version, the one used in the video, features the vocals of DNCE's Joe Jonas. The entire band makes an appearance in the video as well.
The video follows the lyrical storyline, depicting a dysfunctional couple who are bad listeners, but are enamored with each other. They love each other one moment and hate each other the next. Steinfeld, 19, was nominated for an Oscar at age 13 and starred in Pitch Perfect 2, shows off her acting skills once again. She's seen running her hands through her hand in frustration one second and then happily feeding her onscreen love interest Sour Patch Kids the next. Of course these aren't the skills that qualified her for an Oscar nomination, but her emotions do feel genuine throughout the video.
What really shines are Steinfeld's vocal abilities. She shows off a bit of her range in the pre-chorus melting into the chorus. She also has some nice harmonies with Jonas. Jonas captivates Steinfeld and she shows her interest by joining him on stage. They're transfixed on each other, and Steinfeld's sweater even matches Jonas' hair. Meanwhile, her lover is left in the audience watching the chemistry between Steinfeld and Jonas unfold onstage.
There's a screaming match, neon lights, and a few fallen tears. Watch the video below to see how it ends.
Steinfeld is still new to the music scene, while Jonas is a long-time candidate but with a new band. Overall the two make a fun onscreen pair and put together what has the potential to be the next hot anthem.
