Music is everything to me, as it is for many. Because of that, I'm always looking for something new to listen to. Western music is okay but I found myself not as intrigued by it anymore. When I was in high school way back when, a friend of mine tried to get me into Korean pop.Try to get a random person or a friend to listen to Korean pop or anything similar and they give you the look. We all know the look.
That look.
But, if they don't want to open up to new music, then throw a pity party for them because they are missing out.
So, cheers to you who actually open up to trying out new music from someone who wants to introduce you to another culture's music.
The 'take' end is accepting, now all that is needed is the 'give' end. This is the most crucial part as well. Introducing music is just like introducing yourself and first impressions. There's both plenty of good songs out there and not-the-best songs to show when introducing K-Pop to someone unfamiliar to that genre.
You can't just hit a person with Ring Ding Dong by SHINee and not expect them to not take you seriously. Seriously. That's not the best option.
Their reaction would most likely look like that. I mean, that was my reaction as well when listening and I had already been listening to K-Pop for quite a while. It was that and an uncontrollable fit of laughter. (But, seriously, it's catchy and you WILL catch yourself singing it.)
Ease them into something more recent and something you know will grab their interest such as:
-Save Me by BTS
Wow them with a nice, easy-flowing song and great choreography. The vocals should be an attention-grabber, because damn.
-Monster by EXO
Great beats are always nice. Get them hooked on that in-sync choreo and rebellious air.
-Fantasy by VIXX
A dark concept with amazing dancing and a deeper meaning. VIXX is sure to spark some interest with this song and other concepts of previous songs.
-Fly by GOT7
The song has a great beat and style with a music video that tells a story with some of its scenes. Choreography, as always, is also fascinating to see.
Throwing a few female groups out there as well, some that are great to introduce are:
-Ah Yeah by EXID
Hit them up with a song that confronts unwanted attention by females and how many things are easily sexualized and censored. The song has a strong approach toward that with interesting choreo and great vocals paired with an upbeat flow.
-Hate by 4Minute
Awesome beat. Awesome choreo. Tough females and great vocals. Need you say more?
If showing someone these artists doesn't convince them, then I don't know what will. Leave it as loss; they don't know what they're missing out on.
