Disney has released an official teaser for the live-action "Mulan" and I only have one word.
Chills.
When Mulan says "I will bring honor to us all" in regards to finding a husband through the matchmaker, all I could think of was that she must have some psychic power or strong intuition because girl definitely will. Just not in that sense. Savior of China, what? Not only is Mulan confident in herself verbally, but she has serious belief in herself on the battlefield. How someone could look so badass and so graceful simultaneously is beyond my comprehension. I could only dream that I looked that good flipping over someone's head or jumping from building to building.
However, fans may have noticed a few key characters missing such as Li Shang, Mushu, or the lucky cricket. Especially the lack of iconic songs. Trust me, I was heartbroken too. Livid even. Why create "Mulan" into a live action and not have game-changing characters? "Aladdin" did a great job of editing the Genie as did "Beauty and Beast" with the talking , the live actions, of course. The movies even added bonus songs on top of their iconic soundtracks. Why couldn't I hear "Reflection" or "I'll Make A Man Out Of You," which are definitely two of my favorite Disney songs.
It did not even occur to me that there was no Li Shang or Mushu in the "Ballad of Mulan" which Disney based the 1998 animation on. In the original work, Mulan was in the Imperial Army for twelve years and no one had noticed that she was not a male. She had no cricket or family guardian to watch over her as she defeated the army and got the happily ever after. She did not sing along with other soldiers about marching into the battlefield or training. Guaranteed it has been pointed out the titular Mulan was most likely not a real person and is what she is known as today, a legend.
The only talks of Mushu being in the film are on Wikipedia where anyone can edit therefore it is deemed inaccurate. He was one of my favorite characters from 1998 version with his one-liners and comedic relief but maybe he will be humanized. The director has confirmed that iconic songs will make it into the movie as instrumentals. Score. (Pun, get it?) As for Shang, his name can easily just be changed and Mulan could have a love interest of a different name. I know one thing for sure, though. Mulan don't need no man.
Actress Ming-Na Wen, who lent her voice as Mulan in the animation, expressed her excitement for the film and to see people she recognized as Disney did not whitewash the roles. Wen was recently inducted as a Disney Legend so we should all listen to her and heed her every order. I do totally agree that Yifei Liu
There's no way to predict how epic this film will be until it hits theaters. While it may be a tad different from the Mulan that we are accustomed to, I am glad that Disney has decided to steer in the direction of the legend instead.
