Moving In: Freshman Year vs. Sophomore Year

Oh, how the tables have turned.

Moving In: Freshman Year vs. Sophomore Year
Emma Flynn

Ah, it's that time again. It's August, and all summer you've been waiting for this day to arrive. Move in Day. They say that the first summer away from your college is the hardest, and BOY, do you agree. Chances are, you were probably ready to go back to school the second day you returned home after finals. You probably bought one of those countdown apps on your phone in anticipation of this event, just to make sure that you knew exactly how long you had to go. You lay awake at night, envisioning how it'll feel making that last left turn onto campus, and driving down the familiar, fraternity-lined streets. Lucky for you, the day you've long dreamed of has come. But don't forget to take time to remember how you felt at this time last year as a freshman- and look how far you've come.

MOVE IN DAY: FRESHMAN YEAR VS. SOPHOMORE YEAR

The Days Leading Up to School

Freshman: You were scared, excited, nervous, anxious, and had no idea what to expect. How terrifying.

Sophomore: If you had to wait literally one more day, you would probably explode. You can't wait to move into a new place, see your old friends and ~baes~, and IT'S ALL JUST SO FUN.

Pulling onto Campus

Freshman: "There are so many buildings. What if I get lost. Mom and Dad don't even know where they're going. SO. OVERWHELMED."

Sophomore: You take one look at this magical place you've been separated from for so long, and you could almost cry, you're so happy.

Moving In

Freshman: You carry all that stuff up the stairs to your room to realize that your closet is WAY smaller than you anticipated, and your clothes probably are not all going to fit. You didn't even know you packed so much. But you did. Plus, your parents are starting to get emotional, there are clothes everywhere, you JUST CAN'T FIGURE OUT HOW TO LOFT THIS BED, and it's just chaos.

Sophomore: HELLO ROOM. You've moved into a presumably bigger room, either in an apartment, upperclassmen housing, or a Greek house. You're excited to get things going, and to boot, your parents are also ready to GET GOING. Let's go sophomore year.

Unpacking

Freshman: It takes about 3 hours to logistically find a place for everything, decorate your room, and decide how you're going to keep your room organized. It's only halfway through the big day, and you're ready to take a nap.

Sophomore: You throw your clothes very efficiently all over the place, yet also out of the way- you have better things to do. Like saying "Hi" to everyone you know and have missed over the summer.

Going Out for the First Time

Freshman: You're nervous. Who are you supposed to go out with? Where do you want to go? You just have no idea. It's ok, it'll be okay. (The best times happen when you don't have concrete plans.)

Sophomore: You've waited for this for months. You've missed partying with your friends more than anything else in the world. Let's rage.

Turns out freshman year went on to become the best year of your life. And hey, as my man J. Green says; you're on a roller coast that only goes up. What a wonderful second year it will be. ~college~

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
