Movie Review: "Sing Street"

Here it is. My first ever movie review article. Before we jump into this review, I would like to go over how I look at, and judge, movies. Some people -- and the majority of professional critics -- look at movies as a pure art form and forget what a movie should really just do. That is to entertain the audience. That is my number one thing with films. If I am entertained, I am not going to bash the movie for being garbage, but I might find some things here are there that just turned me off.

I've come to learn that no matter what film, people are going to have various opinions about it, but I am here to give you guys my personal take on the movies I have watched. Bottom line of my review process is I like to be entertained, simple as that. Now, for my rating system, I usually do not like to give movies an out of 10 rating or letter grade, but for the sake of it making a proper review and to help you guys understand my review, I am going to try a letter grade system. So without further ado, let's get into this review.

Review

Boys, we all know we sometimes like to make bold lies just to get a girls attention or impress them a bit, but what would happen if you somehow had to make that lie a truth for them to see? Well that is what our main character, Conor (played by first-time actor, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo), had to do to quite a large extent.

John Carney, director of "Begin Again" and "Once," returns to his music genre roots with "Sing Street." He takes the audience back to the 1980s in Dublin, Ireland when just about the whole world was in love with rock-n-roll. We are introduced to Conor right off the bat as he is starting fresh at new Catholic school. There, Conor struggles to fit in and is bullied for being a bit different. As the audience notices that he is a clear outsider, we are introduced to Darren (played by first-time feature film actor, Ben Carolan). Darren is much like Conor, but has a lot more experience of being the outsider. Darren kind of teaches him the way and they form a quick bond.

Later, when Darren and Conor are hanging out in the yard during recess time, Conor catches his first glimpse at Raphina (played by Lucy Boynton). Conor almost falls in love at first sight, and the pair go over to her to try and get her number. Since he is just an average kid with nothing too special about him, he lies and tells her, "I'm part of a band," and invites her to be part of their music video and explains himself to be more of a "futurist." In efforts to form a band, Conor and Darren scrap up some young, raw, local talent which is when the audience is introduced to the rest of the team. Then let the journey to rock-n-roll fame begin.

This film absolutely had me entertained for the full one hour and 46-minute run time. The acting from all the lead actors were absolutely phenomenal. The most jaw dropping fact about the performances is that majority of the kids' roles were first ever performances in a feature film and, boy, did they hit it out of the park. I cannot find one flaw in the acting of these kids because they give such genuine performances.

Moving away from the performances, the soundtrack is an absolute hit. It ties in originals from the cast, which I needed to save to my Spotify, with your '80s rock-n-roll classics, such as Duran Duran and Motorhead. John Carney does a wonderful job bringing this film together and I think it is definitely worth finding on-demand to watch, whether it is with your friends, yourself, or family.

Conclusion: A

I went into this film simply knowing it was an Irish film and knowing very little about the plot. I came out this movie with one of my candidates for Top 10 movie of the year. As of now this movie is sitting #3 on my list of movies this year, just behind "Civil War" (#1) and "Deadpool" (#2).

I hope you enjoyed my first ever movie review article, and hope you come back for more. Please leave a comment or message me on my social media with any thoughts or tweaks you think I should use; it is fully encouraged and would help a lot. Don't know if I want to stick to just my opinion about the movie, and let you guys find out what the movie is really about, or keep it like this and give you guys that introduction to the film's plot. Also, do not forget to let me know what you think of the film, if you have seen it. I would love to hear some other opinions.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
