I recently had a chance to watch the new movie "Daddy's Home," coincidentally with my dad. The film stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg and is a comedy that turns heartwarming in a way. In the film, Ferrell plays a stepdad to a boy and girl whose affection he is trying to win over. Right when he almost wins their affection, the real dad, played by Mark Wahlberg, comes into the picture and steals all of the affection the kids were remotely giving Ferrell's character.
A friend told me that they loved the movie, it was hilarious, and it was an OK movie to see with your parents. The last part put me at ease because you never know with comedies -- and Will Ferrell -- if it's something that makes things awkward for a few minutes.
For the most part it was fine to watch with my dad. A few parts did get awkward, though. One scene involves the two in a fertility clinic; as the doctor is examining them, some of the comments were a little awkward, but that was really the only time things got a little uncomfortable.
It was hilarious at times, and the character that Ferrell plays is pretty funny and the polar opposite of Mark Wahlberg's character, which makes their banter even funnier.
According to my dad, it "was a little corny at times" -- although he hysterically laughed at most of the movie. To me, the beginning was a little slow and then the end had me rolling with laughter.
The movie is rated PG-13 for thematic elements, crude and sensitive content, and language. The film also has a current rating of 4.9 of 10 on Rotten Tomatoes and has a 67 percent audience score. The film definitely isn't one you should go watch with your 13-year-old daughter and vice versa, though. It was raunchy at times.
The film overall was a funny watch, if you really don't have another film you want to watch. A few of the jokes were pretty great and are still stuck in my head, though some parts of the movie were overly cheesy. Although the film hasn't received superb scores, it has sold out fairly quickly at my local theater since the release on Dec. 25.
