The new Marvel film Deadpool came out last weekend amid a crowd of excited Marvel fans, as the primarily raunchy advertising campaign hit its mark. The film flips the superhero genre on its head as the star super in the film, Wade Wilson, is actually an anti-hero. However, even while being an anti-hero movie, a love story between Ryan Reynolds and Morena Baccarin develops throughout the film, giving an actual plot between general raunchiness and action scenes. The box office reflected the general consensus of fans pulling in 100 million dollars more than any of the competitors opening weekend.
Ryan Reynolds provides the perfect portrayal and narration necessary to pull off the number of action scenes, inappropriate jokes, a blooming love story and the numerous fourth wall breaks that occur throughout the film. Going into the film I was expecting the R rating to be largely due to the sexual innuendos, bad language and X-rated humor, what I was not expecting was the level of gore present. Every action scene was accompanied by blood, guts and brains. However, that being said, as someone who does not usually enjoy superhero movies or movies with that much violence, I loved the movie. The humor present in the film brought the level of violence down a little bit for me and the love story gave the film a much needed direction in terms of plot. Besides those components of the film, the actual film making was very well done. The freeze frame shots, the clarity of picture and the different types of camera angles gave a variety that kept your eyes focused on the screen. The gender ratio in the film was also exceptional for the genre providing almost as many female main characters as male, something not as prevalent in Marvel films as it should be.
Overall the film is worth the eight dollars and you may even want to go see it again before it hits store shelves. And there's always Ryan Reynolds to consider.
