To start my day, I had to wake up early...that's never pleasant. Moving out of our parents house is something most of us dream about from puberty onward. Everyone's had that thought after a fight with their parents, "I can't wait until I can move out". At first, I was really terrified and thinking to myself how much I regretted leaving my house but after I settled in with the best roomies I could have gotten I knew I was good to go. My first day in college was full of my parents and I arguing while loading up my boxes in the dorm, a bunch of 'you packed too much,' and tearful goodbyes. All in all a good day, right?
We all read the lists of what to bring, college essentials, and things every freshman can't live without. We made lists upon lists of things we wanted versus things we needed...among the things we actually needed. We stressed over our money and all of the deals that were going on in stores for back to school shopping. The build up to move in was so much more than the actual move in day. We'd have long conversations with our parents and try to decide who gets to take what when you leave or what your room will be re-purposed into. We would think about it day in and day out while we counted the days off until we moved in.
Moving in was enough stress as it was with all the heavy lifting and avoiding other people with their arms full of boxes. You waited in line for the elevator and grew impatient enough to say screw that and walk up flights of stairs with a tower of boxes in tow. Moving was fun, it was scary, it was definitely more anger-inducing than emotional. When you had to say goodbye to your friends and family it was definitely hard. Now that I think back on it, just the day before, I think it went a lot better than I assumed it would.
Now that I'm in college and I've come to accept that I'm an adult who isn't living at home anymore, I feel a bit more at ease. All the nervousness I felt has all gone away at this point. My roommates are amazing, my dorm is perfect, and I have more than enough snacks in my mini fridge to last me until next year. Even though I was someone who started college close to home, and when I say close I mean 20 minutes, I still miss my family. For those of you that had to leave your home town or even home state, I feel for you. Everyone should start their college life great and enjoy it to the max from day one. If your roomies aren't necessarily great, change them out. There's always a solution to any of the problems you're facing and if not then you just move on. From freshman to freshman, good luck!
