When I was little, my mom would always read me children’s books. I’m pretty sure we made it through every single Berenstain Bears book there was, along with other classic series' like Amelia Bedelia. But no matter how many books we read together, we always kept coming back to one. This book slowly became one of my most favorite childhood memories, but also a song that resonates with me to this day. This book was called “Love You Forever”, and included a song that went like this:
“I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always. As long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be.”
My mom would sing this song to me and then tuck me into bed, leaving me feeling warm and safe. And 18 years later, now a college student, I occasionally find myself humming this song. As I reflect closer on the meaning of the words, I find it still rings true today. A mother’s love is unconditional, patient and never-ending.
It’s truly a blessing that from day one, this amazing woman in my life has never stopped loving me. It’s crazy to think about the fact that my mom will always be my mom, no matter what stage of life I am in. Even when I have a little daughter of my own calling me mommy, I will have my own mom to look after me. Thank you for protecting me, comforting me and believing in me. I wouldn’t be half the person I am today without your influence in my life.
Even 500 miles away, you are still my protector. When I’m sick, you always text me to check in on me, making sure I’m drinking enough water and getting adequate sleep. I appreciate the many texts I get from you checking in on me. You are also my No. 1 comforter. If I call you at 2 a.m. crying, you are there to offer me words of wisdom and security. You know how to make me feel better and motivate me to work harder if I get a bad grade on an exam. Thank you for always believing in me, more than myself. You build me up and are always there for me whenever I need you.
Thank you for everything you have done for me during my short 18 years of life. Thank you that each year brings us closer together and that the bond between mother and daughter continues to grow stronger. I will forever be your baby, and I am so blessed to forever be able to call you my mother. I can only hope that one day I will be as great of a mother as you are.
