February 14th is quickly approaching. But let's face it, Valentine's Day should not be that big of a deal. I'm guilty about feeling lonely and have been sad on this day in years past. I have spent this holiday alone every year. I used to call this day "Singles Awareness Day" until recently. Now as it is approaching this year, I have had a revelation that I should not spend the day sad and feeling like a pathetic loser because I'm single, and neither should you.
Valentine's Day was a holiday created in order to celebrate love. Over the course of history times, society has turned into a holiday to center on romance: lots of PDA, chocolates, Valentine's cards, nice dinners, roses, and so much more. This simple holiday of love has twisted into a holiday that makes single people feel isolated. It has come time to leave this trend in 2015 and quit overhyping this holiday.
To my fellow single people: celebrate being single! It's obviously hard to do this when it seems like everyone around you has a significant other, but just get over it! You shouldn't let having a boyfriend or a girlfriend decide whether you are happy or not. Spend the day with people you love or doing something you love. There's nothing wrong with watching sad movies on Netflix and devouring a whole pint of Ben and Jerry's by yourself or with some close friends, just don't make it a pity party. Another idea is to get really dressed up with your friends and get a bomb pic to post on Instagram or Twitter to show you aren't stressed about being single this one day of the year. Instead of letting the Valentine's Day aisle make you sad, buy something for yourself! You deserve a life-sized teddy bear and chocolates to stuff your face with.
To everyone in a relationship: congratulations on liking/loving someone! Now be a kind human being and not rub it in your friends' faces if they do not have Valentine's Day plans like you. Enjoy this day with the people you love!
So take my advice or don't, but I wish all of you happy Valentine's Day. Don't let a lack of a relationship make you feel like a loser, and don't let a relationship make you think you are better than everyone. Celebrate love!
