Being Queer is rarely celebrated . For majority of the year, we think in a heterosexual mind frame. Not only in the classroom but even in the activities we use to un whine are heterosexually laced. TV Shows, books, and movies are usually all just variations of a male and female love story. But here is why a week dedicated to Queer folk was needed, we are different. First, let us define what being Queer means , it is strange to the normal world , different from the heterosexual lifestyle and pretty fantastic. Not everyone gets the chance to understand the way Queer people love, express themselves and come to terms with being free with their sexuality. Broken free from the chains of the mainstream heterosexual world, we are often misunderstood. So this why it is vital for people, groups and organizations to take a stand and create thoughtful events for Queer people to showcase their differences. This past week, Morehouse Safe Space and Afrekete put on a stunning LGBT Pride Week that allowed the Queer kids of the AUC to reign over the campuses for a week. These are a few of the main events that Morehouse Safe Space and Afrekete Pride Week gave us.
A Drag Show
Kicking it off with a drag show, the AUC gathered in Cosby to witness a fantastic show. Glittered and Glammed the Drag Show Divas towered amongst us but competition lurked in the air. It turned into a beautiful talent show consisting of our AUC brothers and sisters showing off their latest dance moves for everyone to bare witness to. Our fellow Clark and Morehouse brothers dominated the competition. In those split moments of pure entertainment , we did not take the time to dwell on the concept of gender. We cheered on the dancers equally, the men who were voguing down the aisle to the girls who were dirty whining, killing it with their steps and freeform dances that had us all roaring for more regardless of gender stereotypes.
Open Mic Night
Open Mic Night created an opportunity for everyone to show their poetic sides. With a collection of poems , songs and stories written and sung by your fellow AUC sisters, the atmosphere in the air was impeccable. Emotions rode wild as we felt the meanings behind every word that left the artist's lips. The safe space definitely created a platform for Queer people to clear their chest and thoughts about lows and highs that comes along with Queer Love.
Safe Sex Workshop
This is where it Pride week took a turn for the grown and sexy. With the Art after Dark vibes running loose throughout the whole event , we were still able to learn how to perform different sexual acts in the safest way possible. Knowledge is power. This was a valuable place to learn it's not what you do, but how you do it.
Hump Day
Hump day left many speechless. The Carefree Queer kids ran free amongst their peers. Showing off their exquisite nature. We let you into our lives as we boosted each other up to have fun and celebrate their Queer Pride. The J-Setters stole the show, as they got in formation and shut it down. The event was so live, our amazing Allies (straight supporters) gravitated to the function and had no choice but to feel the Carefree love running free amongst the crowd. Queer Hump was such a success that it sparked conversations of
Queer Prom

To end to Pride week, Morehouse Safe Space and Afrekete came together to throw an unforgettable Prom for Queer Couples , singles and, of course, our Allies were welcomed. The night went down in history, love was rekindled, foes became friends, first moves were made and everyone was on one accord for the night. It was just a whole bunch of Queer kids allowed to feel nothing but comfort in their own skin.
In the end, Pride week was nothing but a success, just a whole bunch of Queer kids taking control over the AUC and letting you glimpse at just a piece of our world.
