Lecrae Moore is a Christian who raps.
As you’ll find out later, he doesn’t like the title Christian rapper.
He came out with his new album, "Anomaly," on September 9, 2014. After its release, the charts filled with the new songs that were released on this album. It broke records on both the sacred and secular music charts, which, for a Christian artist, is a very big success. "Anomaly" is the first album to ever have landed top on both the Billboard and Gospel Music Charts.
Lecrae talks about the album and its purpose, which is that it’s supposed to make you embrace the fact that “you are different.” Lecrae strongly believes that “in many ways you are going to be an outcast, which is, by nature alone, saying I stand with Jesus has already ostracized you from a lot of people.” Lecrae is a father of three children, and has a wonderful wife. He is one of the only rap artists that doesn’t glorify sex, drugs or violence.
Now, why he is not a fan of the title of ”Christian rapper” is because he’s not a fan of labels. He agrees that being labeled as a Christian is what is important. He thinks that it hinders his personal mission by having that label. Another part of this new album (and all his albums in general) that makes him different is the idea that he puts his vulnerability out there. He was molested, abused, and went through the decision of taking his girlfriend to get an abortion when he was younger. He believes that people who are vulnerable can also be trusted. These situations really help him put heart behind his music. This new album was on top and contained his vulnerabilities.
Personally, I can’t say much bad about Lecrae. I love his music, and even as I write this I’m listening to his other popular album, "Gravity." His music is catchy and really has amazing messages. When I listen to his music I can think, and I understand what he’s saying, which, in turn, pulls on my emotions. He raps about things that I can relate to, which includes temptation and sin.
This new album, "Anomaly," is one I haven’t heard yet, though after this I definitely want to listen to it. Just the fact that a Christian artist can make it to the top of the secular world gives me hope. I look up to Lecrae because even though he has had a terrible, painful past, he stuck through it, and now creates music that I can enjoy and take to heart. This whole interview made my hope in Christians be restored, that there are artists out there that are die-hard Christians and still want to spread their belief to the world.
