"Galavant" is an ABC musical comedy about a knight named Galavant, and his quest for true love. It’s fun, hilarious, and there’s nothing like it on television. People have compared it to Monty Python, and it gave television exactly what it was missing: campy Medieval musical numbers. It has the nostalgia and untainted joy of the Disney movies we all know and love (maybe because the songs are written by Alan Menken and Glen Slater), but without the censored and toned-down lyrics.
Unfortunately, ABC canceled Galavant after its second season. I won't give any spoilers (because you should totally watch it), but while the season finale tied up loose ends, it definitely left room for more.
In hopes to renew the show, possibly on Hulu, fans started the #MoreGalavant campaign on social media and there's an online online petition. In general, television shows are moving off cable and onto websites anyway, so this seems like a natural progression for the beloved show. It's a great show, and it deserves a chance to show the world everything else it has to offer.
To thank the fans for their efforts, the cast and crew made a fun dance-y music video to the song “Can’t Stop This Feeling.” The video features clips from the show, cast members dancing, and cameos from celebrity guests. As Weird Al says, “Feel the power of the hashtag!"
Yes, there are more pressing issues in the world, but "Galavant" is a source of joy for over 17,000 people, and even a small effort such as making a tweet or signing the petition might make a difference.
But if you’re not convinced yet, here are some of the best musical numbers that will surely make you want to see more of this wonderful show!
1. She'll Be Mine
King Richard is your average flamboyant Disney villain singing about beheading and stabbing Galavant. And it's all with a fun dance number and campy self-referential comments. With a performance like this one in the pilot, you know the show is going to be great. And it doesn’t disappoint.
2. Goodnight My Friend
"Galavant" is a comedy, but when they want to, they can really tear at your heartstrings. Partly because of the great writing, and partly because of Timothy Omundson's great acting, but "Goodnight My Friend" is both heart-wrenching and the perfect lullaby.
3. Today We Rise
Sid doesn’t get the spotlight too often, but in this one he really shines. The lyrics are hilariously gruesome, and Luke Youngblood really brings it. It makes you want to stand up and revolt (!), even when you know there's absolutely no hope of survival...4. A New Tomorrow
An overlooked gem sung by a new democracy, it’s terrible and cringe-worthy because it's so true. Unlike other Medieval adventure tales, it doesn't sugarcoat the time period.
5. Maybe You Won't Die Alone
The perfect advice for first dates, so take notes. Lucky for King Richard, after this he probably won't die alone.
6. As Good As It Gets
The Chef and Gwynne are my favorite, and all their songs are adorably disgusting. It's swing, so it's pretty different from the other showtune-esque songs. I was upset when they moved away, but maybe we’ll see them again in Season 3!
7. Do the D'Dew
Listen to this once, and it will be stuck in your head for the next two weeks. It sounds like it belongs in Snow White, and I feel like birds should be chirping along.
8. What Am I Feeling?
Queen Madalena might have left Galavant to live the lavish life and she might start wars for fun, but "Galavant" doesn’t play the one-sided villain trope. Characters are multi-layered, and you can’t help feel bad for her when you see her backstory.
9. Off With His Shirt!
There's no better way to start a season than a jolly musical number sung by a sassy queen in a gay bar ripping off Galavant's ruffle shirt.
10. World's Best Kiss
Not all kisses can be perfect, even when you're pretty close to living in a fairytale.
11. A Good Day To Die (Reprise)
The song completely breaks the fourth wall, and it's great. "It's a good day to die! Oh please, this isn't 'Game of Thrones." Amazing.
12. My Dragon Pal and Me
King Richard singing with a lizard (sorry, I mean dragon) about destroying the town backed by a sequence of them frolicking in a meadow, what else do you need? I believe in your Tad Cooper!13. Finally
A parody of “Summer Nights” from Grease, you can’t help but root for King Richard and Roberta. It took King Richard a bit to get the memo, but he finally got it.
14. Will My Day Ever Come?
King Richard singing a song with his inner child, it’s pure genius. No matter who your favorite character is, King Richard is the star of the show, and his character arch is both the most hilarious and the most touching.
15. Galavant Theme
Classic. It should have won the Emmy.
