College is a mix of feeling like an independent adult, but also a 5-year-old who cannot fend for their self. It's kind of like that feeling you get when a teacher hands you a test that you're really not ready for. But nevertheless it's a thing and the first month of college is both everything and nothing you'd totally be expecting.
1. The first month is meeting new friends. I've met so many new faces, I feel like I know everyone, but at the same time nobody. I know all the people in my classes but I only see them in class. It's weird because the friends you make the first day or week, more often than not, don't turn into the friends you keep. But you do meet some really cool people that turn into your best friends and honestly, it's the best thing ever.
2. The first month is missing your high school life. I don't necessarily miss everything that came with being in high school, but I feel like a part of my identity left when I left. I was the girl who danced and made good grades. When you get to college, any sort of label you used to have...vanishes! Which is completely awesome, but also sort of terrifying. You really are starting over.
3. The first month is trying new things. It's going to buy a pet fish randomly with your roommates and eating 10 insomnia cookies in one night. You go places you never thought of going and try things you didn't know existed. It can appear daunting, but try everything. Try and say yes to new experiences, because you never know what can happen.
4. The first month is missing your people. I have been lucky enough to meet some of my best friends while being here at college, but that doesn't mean I don't miss people from home. I cried harder than I ever have when my family dropped me off, and each time my friends Snapchat me with their new friends I get upset. I miss people I didn't think I'd miss, and all I wish is to talk and laugh with them again. It's normal to miss these people, but the good thing is we live in the age of smartphones! You never truly appreciate FaceTime more than when it's all you've got to see those familiar faces you love so much.
5. The first month is stressful. College is definitely different than that last year of high school. No more home cooked meals, no more Spark Noting everything handed to you. It's the big leagues and yeah, it's hard. It's doable, you just have to give yourself to confidence and motivation to realize that you can do whatever you set your mind to!
6. The first month is fun. Between the stress, pangs of being homesick, and weirdness you feel, college is without a doubt so much fun. You are on your own now and get to make decisions for yourself. Figuring out who you really are and what you like/dislike is one of the best experiences ever. Don't rush into anything, see where life takes you and just enjoy it!
