With the average enrollment being about 3,000 students, the University of Montevallo is thought to be a place for introverts. While the University and city is open to introverts without being judged, as they should be able to, it is also home to many extroverts like me.
On the Myers-Briggs Personality Test, I am an ENFJ, with my percentage for extrovert being 100 percent. To me, being extroverted means you’re a people person, who loves being around people, who loves meeting people, and who gets joy and happiness from being around people. As defined by Webster’s Dictionary, extrovert means “a friendly person who likes being with and talking to other people: an outgoing person.” Rather than being exhausted from hanging around people, I become energized from talking and meeting people; don't get me wrong, it can wear me out, but I absolutely love it. I love to talk to people. I love to go out and have fun with people. I just absolutely love being around people almost as much as Buddy the Elf loves Christmas.
How is the little town of Montevallo, and a little school like Montevallo a place for extroverts? Well, let me tell you, there is so much you can do in Montevallo.
As far as the city goes, there are many opportunities to give back to the community. One example that I actually take part in is the local Boy’s and Girl’s Club. This is a great way to give back to the local kids while also having a little fun. The kids there are great and are full of energy and honestly, they can lighten your day with their playfulness. I highly recommend becoming involved with them if you get the chance.
There is also the Art Walk in Orr Park that the city holds every so often. Local artists bring out their art, whether it be paintings or jewelry, and you can go around, look, and even buy the art! If you’re an extrovert, this is a great way to meet some of the local artists and help them in their endeavors to start a career in art. The city of Montevallo has more than just these opportunities for extroverts, but a bulk of opportunities comes from the university.

But, what if you’re like me and being a member of these organizations just isn’t enough? Well, the Greek community at Montevallo is a perfect way of meeting new people and finding a group that has similar interests and values as you. Don’t want to go Greek? Well how about joining SGA? SGA at Montevallo is a great way to get involved and advocate for things you want to see on campus. And if you have a deep love for Montevallo like I do, then consider becoming an Orientation Leader or a Montevallo Master; both are excellent opportunities to show school pride and provide network opportunities. College Night is another great way to get involved; introverted or extroverted, anyone and everyone can find some way to participate. All of these and more are excellent opportunities for extroverts to be who they are and surround themselves with amazing, likeminded people.
What is great about the city and university is that they are a place for both introverts and extroverts. As an extrovert, I have found myself to taking any opportunity I can to meet new people. But it is also great that introverts can hide away when they feel needed without being pestered. Regardless, Montevallo provides a loving home for everyone.
