There is a preconception surrounding southern culture. Some may think the south is simply a place of good food and strong accents made up of a pretense of perfection with fake religious undertones. Exemplified by famous phrases coined below the Mason-Dixon, like "bless your heart," which hide subtle insults beneath seemingly sweet words. But there is depth to a culture convinced of putting their best face forward that goes beyond stereotypes. These lessons come with the territory of growing up southern.
1. The importance of a story
Preservation of tradition is of utmost importance so names are passed down, places are preserved, and stories can be found in almost anything.
2. The value of friendship
Everyone takes advantage of any opportunity to socialize because community is important. If football is religion, a tailgate is fellowship. Connections turn big cities into small towns and you can't go anywhere without running into someone you know.
3. Respect has been ingrained
From yes ma'am's and no sirs to dressing for the occasion, manners matter. Dressing nicely shows you took the time to respect for the person or event you are attending--so church, sporting events, and even lunch with friends is an occasion for looking nice. And it is no small task to look your best in the sweltering summer humidity.
4. Hospitality is a virtue
Part of hospitality is kindness, going out of your way to make others feel comfortable, whether they're guests in your home or someone you just met out and about. It isn't fake, it's just being nice.
5. Food is an expression of love
This is why we make it the best. Memories are made around the table and meals are shared to those who need them.
6. There is pride in where we come from
Taking pride in our family, where we come from, and what we stand for has created a loyalty in us. All these things have made us who we are today and it makes us proud.
There's more to the south than monograms and sweet tea that can be found in the lessons southerners have been brought up with. These lessons ring true in our hearts and remind us of our roots and how thankful we are to have grown up in the best place possible.
