The worst thing about college, as most soon-to-be or current college students know, is when people ask you what your major is and what you plan to do with it. With a smile on my face, I’ll confidently answer, “Human Services and I want to work with non-profits,” and instantly the person who asked shift themselves in their seat. The environment changes into a sympathetic, “Good luck making money, sweetheart!” as my smile fades and I start to question every life decision I’ve made thus far.
The thing is, when I sit and think about it, I could change my major and make good money doing something else, but I would wake up in the morning and dread going to class, and one day I would graduate and dread going to work. Even though I could one day learn to like doing something else, I could never learn to love it and have a passion for it the way I do for my major now.
Despite the people who tell you and me otherwise, I still firmly believe that there are way too many good reasons to do something that I love to ever do something that I don’t love just to make more money.
Anyway, your major does not determine where your career will go or what job you’re going to have. Just because you major in journalism does not mean that you have to necessarily end up working for a newspaper. There are so many different possibilities for you to be incredibly successful outside of what seems to be your "only" career path.
Also, your major does not define what your income will be. Just because I major in Human Services, does not mean that I will never be successful or make good money. No matter what field you are in, it is still possible to live a life of achievement and bliss.
As everyone always says, “If it doesn’t make you happy, why would you want to do it for the rest of your life?” Whatever you major in in college is going to be a part of your life forever. If you are not happy with what you’re doing, why would you willingly choose to spend your forever doing it?
Ultimately, college should be a place where you learn about who you are and how you fit into life. It is a place to find the things that make your heart double in size and to learn everything you can in order to do those things exceptionally.
Don't get me wrong, money is still very important, but don’t miss out on living a life doing the best you can at a job you are in love with by instead living a life working solely for the paycheck. Your life is too short to not love every second of it!
