“My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.” -George Washington
Here recently, I have been thinking a lot about how much I miss living under my parent's roof. It's just a different kind of comfort knowing that they are taking care of me. When I moved out for college a few years back, I never knew how hard it would actually be.
After moving out I learned very quickly how difficult it is to live on your own. Like seriously, it's not as fun as it once seemed. Groceries and necessities aren't cheap and money definitely doesn't grow on trees so I was in for a rude awakening!
Also, I learned that I have a special kind of appreciation for my mom. Now that I am older I see her more as a friend, role model, and mentor rather than a parent setting rules. She is a superhero who literally knows everything, and I am not sure how she does it.
Listed, are just a few (embarrassing) examples of things that over the past few years I couldn't do without asking my mom:
1) "I think I'm sick, can YOU make me an appointment to see my doctor?"
I was completely dumbfounded when my mom told me she could no longer schedule any of my appointments since I am over the age of 18.
2) "What's my social security number?"
That's probably something I should have already had memorized but at the time I had no clue. For some reason, I thought my mom had that information on her at all times. But to my dismay, she didn't.
3) "What's a credit score?" "Can I use yours?"
It's embarrassing to admit how confused I was when she explained the concept of credit and interest rates.
4. "What is a money order?" "Can you get me one?"
5. "How much water do I use when I cook noodles?" "Should I leave it on medium or medium-high?" "What happens if the water boils over?"
I can NOT cook, enough said.
6. "How do I pay for my electricity bill?" "If I give you the money, can you do it for me?" 7. "My apartment still hasn't fixed my internet connection, If I give you their number can you call up there and yell at them?"
8. "What's our Netflix password? How about your amazon prime password?"9. "I made chicken and ate it while the center of the chicken was still pink, am I going to die? Do I need to make a doctor appointment?"
10. "How do I get a ketchup stain off of my white shirt?"11. "How do I do laundry? Like, can I put colors and darks together and whites separate?"12. "How do I go grocery shopping? What types of foods should I buy?"13. "How do I work a thermostat? Should I leave it on a certain temperature to save money or what?"14. My light went out in the bedroom, If I go out and buy one, is there a certain one I should get?" "Which kind do you use?"15. "I had my six month dental cleaning today and they're asking me what my insurance is... Can you talk to them?"16. "I think I signed up for a credit card on accident... Is there a way I can un sign up for it?"
17. "I accidentally used said credit card on some online shopping, If I pay it off, can I still un-sign up for the credit card later?"
18. "Can you file my taxes for me? How much do you think I'll get back this year?"19. "How do I renew my registration on my car? Does it cost? How much? Why does it cost so much?"
20. "Why did I ever move out? I should have never taken you for granted, can I move back in?"
I love my mom more than anything and I know for a fact that I wouldn't have been able to make it on my own without her advice, love, and support.
