Sunday, July 16th, was National Ice Cream Day. Being the foodie that I am, I knew that I had to participate in it for my own benefit. Shortly after learning that I had no one to go to Magnum with, I've decided to head to an all time favorite place of mine — Momofuku Milk Bar (specifically their East Village location, which is on 13th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenue).
Momofuku Milk Bar is known for their soft serve cereal milk ice cream. Instead of opting for that, I've noticed that they've brought back their birthday/confetti flavor — which is what I've ended up ordering. While I was ordering, I've noticed that they had their birthday balm dot com lip balm in stock, which Glossier took upon themselves to make based off of Momofuku's birthday/confetti flavor. Genius? I think so.
The lip balm itself is as smooth as Nivea's lip balms, but the only difference is that it has a birthday cake flavor to it. Also from personal experience (aka applying it on the Q train on my way home from Williamsburg), it's edible but tastes like magical vanilla. Would I recommend it as a product? Yes.
When eating this flavor of ice cream, I've immediately thought of a crumbled up vanilla sugar cookie but with extra milk, sugar, and sprinkles in it. It sounds basic, but it does the job and sometimes, going with the basics is the best way to go. Why? From personal experience, some of the more "unconventional" food trends lack quality in overall taste but are successful in adding some form of aesthetic to your Instagram account, which does more benefit to your Insta account than to your taste buds and wallets. Victims of this would be Starbucks' Unicorn Frappuccino and The Good Sort's Rainbow Latte... cmon... WYD? The Unicorn Frappuccino tasted like a wannabe Sour Patch Kid while the Rainbow Latte from The Good Sort tasted like herbal Tylenol... it wasn't cute.
Thankfully Momofuku and Glossier both know what they're doing when it comes to food and food related products. The fact that the Balm Dotcom tasted better than the Frappuccino and the latte was saddening since it's technically a beauty product based off of food.
