Why My Mom Is My Hero
Alaina Wyrsch

You must have seen this one coming. Since I wrote about my dad last week, it only seems fitting that I write about my mom this week. I mean, who doesn’t think that their parents are their heroes? I’m lucky in the sense that my parents aren’t only my parents, but they’re my best friends. I don’t know what I would do without them, especially my mom. She is the one I go to for advice, for when I need to gossip, or when I just need a hug. All moms out there are heroes, and my mom is my hero because of…

1. Her compassion

Moms are the most compassionate beings. They care for us and are always there, no matter what. My mom is the most compassionate woman I have ever met. Her ability to always be so calm and loving towards me just amazes me. A mother's gentle touch is just what you need sometimes.

2. Her words

My mom knows EXACTLY what to say to me. Whether its me having a breakdown from stress or boys being dumb; she always seems to say the right thing. I don’t know how she does it. Are moms just born that way or do they learn it from their mothers? I honestly have no clue how it works, but I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have those regular conservations with my mom. Trust me, mother always knows best.

3. Her care

“Mom, can you drive me to soccer practice?” “Mom, what’s for dinner?” “Mom, can you do my laundry?” Although my mom hears these questions and many others on a regular basis, she never complains. She has cared for me for the past nineteen years, and I hope she will continue doing so for a while. And despite her crazy life, she makes sure to always have dinner on the table no matter what.

4. Her heart

I have never met someone with a bigger heart than my mom. She is kind and caring to everyone that she meets, and her laugh will just make you smile. Whether she’s walking for breast cancer awareness or donating her time to help those in need, she makes a lasting impression on this world.

5. Her work ethic

All mothers out there deserve an award for how hard they work. They never get enough credit for what they do for others, especially my mom. Not only does my mom work 9-10 hour days, but she then comes home to cleaning, laundry, cooking, etc. What more can she possibly do?

6. Her love

Nothing can compare to a mothers love for their child. My mom's love for me will last forever, just as mine will for her. “A Mother's love is something that no one can explain. It is made of deep devotion and of sacrifice and pain. It is endless and unselfish and enduring come what may, for nothing can destroy it or take that love away”—Helen Steiner Rice

I love you mom, always and forever!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
