Mocking Other Majors

This is sort of like grown up bullying, so don't do it.

Mocking Other Majors

Side note: This may not apply to all schools, but I hope somewhere in this article you find something to relate to.

College is a place where you can explore your area of focus to an extent that you could not delve into during high school. You are required to take certain classes with others that are just as passionate as you are about your focus, but you are also required to take classes outside of your major so you can explore other options and overall make you a more well-rounded individual. Even if you are intelligent, college is supposed to be a learning experience, right?

So why is it that when I don't understand something in a class that isn't of my major, I am considered inept? Why is it that when I don't raise my hand because I don't know the answer, it's because I'm an idiot? I study theatre because I love performing, not because I don't know anything else. Just because you have a certain major doesn't mean you don't have other interests. Strike up a conversation with me about history or ask me to perform an algebraic equation, I can do that. Just because I can sing doesn't mean I can't write. Just because I can act doesn't mean I can't do math. Just because I can dance (sorta) doesn't mean I can't do science. I am a performer, but most importantly- I'm a student.

I go to a Liberal Arts school with a plethora of different majors, from Studio Art to Biology to Theatre to International Studies. There is no major more important than the other, no matter how many people are in the department or what their graduation rate is. However, it is safe to say that a large majority of us study theatre. Whether you focus on performing, directing, stage managing, etc., you are still studying an aspect of theatre. It is very common to hear people singing in the halls or practicing their scenes, which granted can be annoying- but why mock the major? Why put an end to expressing creativity? I would never mock another major for publicly expressing their knowledge. I am intrigued by others. To reiterate my point earlier, I am here to learn.

That being said, it is sad to see tweets from other majors saying they think it's funny to see theatre majors confused in non-theatre classes. It is sad to see snapchats from other majors of them singing and deliberately mocking the ability and talent of theatre majors. It is sad to see such a division at school between the arts majors and the non arts majors, because at the end of the day we all have something in common- and that is that we're all extremely passionate about something. So passionate that we moved away from home to pursue it.

My major is a reflection of myself, and to mock that is to mock me. I am the notes I sing, I am the commands I act, I am the turns I dance, and more importantly I am the art I bleed. Be the intelligence that you inherit, do not be the bully that you chose to portray.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
