This "Mixed Babies" Obsession Is Too Much

So, I feel the need to address an issue within not only the black community. Now although the obsession with fair skin or mixed races didn't start recently, it has grown into an obsession over the past few years. Some black people want to have mixed babies because they're deemed as "better" or "cuter" because they have the best of both worlds, in a sense. They get the black and white, Asian, or Hispanic qualities too. Other races have also noticed this and want to mix with someone who is black to create this mixed beauty.

Out of all the races to mix, black and white seem to be the most popular. It's probably because the child can get the "good" black qualities such as kinky hair texture, full lips, and melanin filled skin (just to name a few) while getting the light eyes, longer more "managble" hair, and lighter skin, but not too light. Just light enough to clearly be identified as mixed. Now the traits I just listed are just some of the reasons people have given for wanting a mixed child which is mind blowingly heartbreaking to me. To hear some of my people say they want or prefer a mixed child for those reasons just makes me wish more of us had self love and self pride.

I am fully black. My mother and father are both African American. Yes, like others I know there are other races within my bloodline but that doesn't matter to me because I know who I am. I know who I identify as and I'm proud to call myself a black woman. I'm proud to be raised by, nurtured, and loved by a black woman in a black family. I say "black" so many times because too many African Americans see being black as a negative or inferior. Of course I can't necessarily blame their viewing of white as being "right" or superior. Part of that blame started from slavery with the help of Willie Lynch who taught slave masters how to control their slaves. One of his methods was to tell the lighter slaves they were superior to the darker slaves. This may seem irrelevant but he said his methods could control ones slaves for at least 300 years. Slavery has only been over for 151 years. With that being said, realize where some of these mindesets of inferiority derived from. Just because we aren't physically slaves doesn't mean a lot of us aren't still slaves mentally.

Anyone who genuinely believes their child would look or be better if they're mixed has issues within themselves because most that have this mindset have black parents. Their grandmother, grandfather, aunts, uncles, etc are black yet they can't see the beauty in their own qualities and features. Why does your child's blood have to be mixed with another to be good enough? Being black and proud is beautiful.

At the end of the day, being fully black isn't a curse. We make gorgeous children of all shades with a plethora of features. We are far from inferior and we need to stop being viewed as such. Having kinky, nappy hair or vuluptious lips or having melanin are just a few of the qualities other races envy. They want all the features we have because they see how amazingly beautiful it is. So if others can see the how great we are, why can't some of our people?

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
