The Misunderstood White Lie

And why we should defend it.

The Misunderstood White Lie
Huffington Post

Growing up we are taught that lying is always wrong, But as we grew up we soon realized that nothing is ever that simple. Why do people lie? Yes, it's true as we all know by now some people lie to manipulate others. Whether it be stealing money or having an affair this form of lying is unjust and gives living a bad reputation. But what type of lying is justified then? It depends on the situation mostly. Let's say I tell my mother that I have breakfast every day before class, but in reality, I’m using that time for an extra 10 minutes of sleep. This is a white lie. What's the harm in telling this small fib? The truth would just cause a pointless argument where nobody would benefit. This types of lies are to avoid unnecessary conflict and we all tell them regardless of how honest we are.

Another reason to lie could just be privacy plain and simple. When you get involved with somebody new your friends tend to pester you for information. I get it they are curious and interested in your life and I suppose they have the right to inquire. If that's the case they I suppose you should have the right to deny any involvement. Yes, that would be considered a lie, but it's a lie to protect your own privacy. Then there are the lies of omission. It’s hard to pinpoint when it's wrong to omit information and when it's acceptable. Personally, it all depends on your intentions. If you're omitting to spare some pain then perhaps it could be justified. But, if it's just to protect yourself from a mistake you made then maybe is not justified.

No matter which you tackle this topic it's extremely sensitive. Sure I'm taking a rather unpopular position in supporting “white lies,” but I think there are definitely justifications for their use. Of course, it's important not to make a habit out of lying. It's far too easy for people to get caught up in their own made up justifications. The lessons our parents bought us when we where kids are still important. It's usually better to tell the truth. Even if it seems easier to just lie. However, I don't think anyone can argue that there are some situations where lying a bit would be better for everyone involved. We will all make mistakes trying to find the right situations to use while lies. This is unavoidable, just keep an open mind, as we should do in all aspects of our life.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
