If I could do it all over again, I would.
As an incoming senior in college, it can really make you think where in the world the time went. The day I moved into a dorm room seems like it happened just yesterday, and I know so many other senior students that could tell you the same thing. I see many new faces around my campus and anytime I interact with a first-year student, I always tell them the same thing: make it count.
So, to all the college newbies out there, here are three pieces of advice I wish I knew as a freshman.
1. Don't have the "the Freshman 15 won't happen to me" mentality.
Seriously, I used to be so thin when I first started out school. My weight gain in college was not that awful, but it's just crazy that I did add on a few pounds when I always was used to being naturally skinny while eating whenever I wanted. I always ate out in high school, fast food, soda, anything unhealthy to be honest. I never had to face the backlash for a poor diet until I got to college, where I had so many greasy, fried options with my meal plan and I just ate like I did in high school, but on a more consistent basis. To make it simple, try to find the healthy options. I know it's nice to have tasty food that's not good for you by just a swipe of a student ID, but it definitely is going to leave its mark.
2. Do not attach yourself to the kids from high school.
This was more of a mistake I made at the beginning of college, but quickly got over it. I hope that everyone would do the same. When I finally broke out of my shell, I was comfortable meeting new people and I met some of the best friends I have ever had at college, and that wouldn't have been the case if I were to constantly hang out with my high school friends. You are seriously missing out if you keep your circle exclusive.
3. Upgrade your wardrobe to a more mature style.
I don't know why, but I always cringe at the things I used to wear as a freshman. When going out, my go to outfit would a pair of high waisted leggings, with a tight, floral crop top. Yikes! I have a much better sense of fashion now, and a better idea of what actually flatters my personal body type rather than just wearing what everyone else would wear.
