10 Things That I Miss About Home
Madeline Otten

With Thanksgiving break coming up, the opportunity to go home is approaching, and there is so much that I miss from home. From seeing high school friends to spending time with my family, there is so much that I cannot wait to do when I get home for this break.

1. Hanging out with my friends: A bunch of my friends went different directions when it came to college, and we haven not seen each other since summer. Going home gives us a chance to hang out again and catch up with what has happened over the semester and also give us an excuse to indulge in sweets and ice cream.

2. Home cooking: I am so ready for home-cooked meals by my parents instead of the dinning hall foods, and the food that I make myself is nothing compared to my mom's honey Dijon-coated salmon with pecans.

3. My own bed: Even though I have an egg crate on my bed, there is still something about sleeping in my own bed that makes it more comfortable.

4. No class: Everyone can appreciate this one. Even though my class is not super early, it'll be nice not having to walk to class in the chilly November breeze.

5. My brothers: I honestly miss having weird conversations with my brothers or cracking jokes with them. Growing up with them for a majority of my childhood, it is sometimes weird not having conversations with them every day.

6. Family game night: My family really likes to play cards and it's become a thing whenever my brothers and I come home to visit. We play games from O'Heck and Apples to Apples, to Cards Against Humanity. Yes, my family plays that game and we have a great time cracking up over the messed-up answers my family plays.

7. Stars: Living in Northern Virginia and near Washington, D.C., because of the city lights, it is difficult to see the stars for most of the nights. As for being at home, I live in a very rural area, so seeing the stars at night is no problem. I get to point out constellations left and right when I'm at home, but in NOVA, I have to look really hard to find Orion's belt some of the nights.

8. An actual shower: Ladies, do I need to say more? The stalls here at school and most college campuses are small and narrow, and with a tub at home, shaving my legs will not be as difficult as it would be at school.

9. A dishwasher: I have definitely learned to appreciate when I clean my own dishes because we don't have a dishwasher in my apartment. It sucks having to clean dishes all the time, so I am low-key looking forward to just placing the dishes away and letting the machine do the work.

10. Driving: Not having a car on campus is not too bad since we have shuttle buses and the bus system on our side, but I do miss driving, especially when I am on the highway driving to town, blasting music on the radio and jamming out with friends.

Eventually, I will have to go back, but then that little tease of home will just make me more ready to be done with the first semester and to push through the last few weeks and be ready to come home for winter break.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
